  • Wooded site in a birdwatching haven on the edge of Bannac lake
  • Adventure park with zipline, miniature golf, pool and paddling pool
  • Fishing and pedalo hire available on site
As you might gather from the name, Camping Lac aux Oiseaux is a place to spot birds. And is in a lakeside setting. (And has a flutteringly high amount of stuff to do on site, but more of that later). Camping Lac aux Oiseaux's Aveyron countryside locale just outside the Causses de Quercy Regional Natural Park is in a wooded area above Bannac lake in a wildlife and birdwatching haven. You should spot lots of fluttery species as you wander the path around the lake shore: look for migratory birds, ospreys, herons and egrets on your travels or from the lake's bird hide. And as for activities on the water? Fishing and pedalo hire are available at the lake, and canoeing trips, paddleboarding, waterskiing and jetskiing within driving distance at the Lot and Averyron rivers. And as for the stacks of stuff on site. Lac aux Oiseaux has a treetop adventure course with zipline, so you can fly gleefully among the trees, and there's also miniature golf, a playground, a pétanque court and free wifi. More splashing can be sorted at the pool and paddling pool, before an ice cream, snack or drink from the bar.

Local attractions

Bannac lake's a lush spot for fishing, pedalo boating, strolling and birdwatching: about 30 wetland species have been spotted here; there are a few dozen pairs of heron, and you should also see egrets, reed buntings and ospreys. Grass snakes and lizards are among the cold-blooded critters around the lake, and salamanders and natterjack toads among the amphibians. Canoe, waterski or jetski on the Lot river from Cajarc, 14 kilometres from the site's local town of Martiel. 30 kilometres away from Najac, have more of the same along with paddleboarding (not, perhaps, all at the same time) on the Aveyron river, or bypass the rivers entirely for hikes, hang gliding, climbing and mountain biking around the magnif Aveyron Gorges. History? Loc-Dieu Abbey five kilometres away is the 12th-century abbey where paintings from the Louvre (including the Mona Lisa) were hidden centuries later in World War II. It's a short drive from here to the historic town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, and from there east to Belcastel or south to Najac to the south.
