  • A 15-minute walk from the medieval centre of Sévérac-le-Château
  • Half an hour's drive from the Tarn river gorges
  • Heated pool, games room, book loans, shop, restaurant and snack bar
A short stroll from Sévérac-le-Château’s medieval centre for town amenities and an easy drive from a lengthy list of outdoorsy antics – if you favour variety on your vacation (or your lot have rather differing sets of demands), a stay at Camping Les Calquières should see you sorted. This family-friendly Aveyron site is handily located on the edge of town, within 15 minutes' walk of château jaunts and everyday essentials including restaurants, shops and the local train station. Those keen to get plenty of fresh air should pile into the car for 20 minutes to hit the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park and the Gorges du Tarn for all manner of activities (think hiking, biking, canoeing, climbing…). There’s plenty of frolics to be had on site too: the swimming pool has a sun terrace for fine days and a retractable cover for less clement times, and there’s also a playground and games room with TV and table tennis. In summer the friendly staff fill daytime hours with kids’ activities, pétanque tournaments and aqua gym classes, and evenings with quizzes, moonlight swims and dancing. If you can’t face the walk into town, you’ll be chuffed to hear that eats are on site, either at the restaurant, the snack bar or the mini market, and there’s a daily delivery of fresh bread and pastries.

Local attractions

Start your survey of the area with a saunter into Sévérac-le-Château: the medieval centre is made for wandering, and there are some cracking views from the castle (positioned at a haughty 817 metres to look down on its domain). Alfresco days in the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park can be as leisurely or as hair raising as you like… At the more chilled end of the spectrum, there are all sorts of walking trails to follow and the Tarn river is a top spot for trout fishing. To get your pulse up a bit, head to Les Vignes (25 minutes by car) for a whole heap of adventure activities including climbing, canyoning and rafting with expert guidance. A highlight of the natural park is the gorgeous Gorges du Tarn, half an hour away. Paddling a canoe or kayak is a popular way to take in the scenery, but you can also get face to face with the cliffs on a climbing trip or just amble along the footpaths.
