  • Next to the Gers river in the Gers valley
  • Within easy reach of Mont Astarac and Auch
  • Complimentary aperitif on arrival: meet local food producers
The gorgeous Ger valley is the setting of scenic Camping Les Berges Du Gers, just outside the fortified village of Masseube. Regional produce like wine, cheese, fruit, duck or goose foie gras, Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne aperitif is all present and correct in these parts, along with outdoor opps like canoeng and kayaking, parachuting and hiking; and a good clutch too of festivals, châteaux and abbeys… It's excellently scenic around the grounds as well (even the toilet and shower blocks are colourfully handsome), among green surrounds and plenty of play space, and well-kept leisure facilities including a big pool with slides, whirlpool baths and a giant mushroom water fountain. The site also has a play area with a ping pong table, slides, swings and a sandbox, and runs regular activities like pétanque competitions, tennis, beach tennis, aqua gym sessions, swimming lessons, country-style dinners, bingo games and belote (card game) contests. There's a communal barbecue area for eats – and if you're keen to start investigating the lush local produce just as soon as you arrive, the amiable owners here welcome all guests with a complimentary aperitif meet, where you'll be able to taste some local products and meet some local producers.

Local attractions

Like much of the Ger valley, these lands are ripe for hiking and biking, and you don't have far to go to try either out, as three trails are accessible directly from the site. This is also a land of châteaux – Saint Blancard, Bellegarde, Monlaur-Bernet, Ponsan Soubiran and Mauvezin are all recommended – and of old ornate abbeys, including Flaran, Sylvanès Abbey and Sorèze. If you don't mind travelling further, the most visited pilgrimage shrine in the Christian world, Lourdes, is just under 100 kilometres from Masseube. (And 15 minutes from there? Sink into a session at the recreational spa of the Jardin des Bains.) If you're feeling cultural, amble along to one of the festivals of the area, like the Festival Country Music in Mirande, Tempo Latino in Vic-Fezensac and jazz concerts in Marciac, and for sporty sorts, there's a top range of stuff to pick from including canoeng and kayaking in Mirande, tre climbing and paintball in Pavie, quad biking in Auch and parachute jumping in Castelnau Magnoac. Department capital Auch is 24 kilometres from Masseube: pick up a guide at the town tourist office to take the red or green route around this pretty city's fab old buildings.
