  • Roomy family site surrounded by visitor attractions and historic towns
  • Large leisure park with sailing, watersports and more 12km away
  • Private fishing pond, bouncy castle and outdoor pool with waterslides
What a well-appointed site this is: waterslides, ponies, ducks and geese, a kids’ club and tons of toys and games to keep the littlies amused, plus a roomy solarium, a fishing lake and a poolside terrace restaurant and bar to sort grownups’ relaxing time. The locale of Camping Des Étangs is well-served too: about 15 minutes' drive away in Saint-Nicolas de la Grave there's a leisure centre with an outdoor pool, pedalos, motor boats, fishing, sailing, and mountain biking, and further afield a waterpark is at Saint-Sardos and a tree climbing park at Montech, both less than 25 minutes' pootle away. Plenty of historic towns, villages and monuments are within easy reach too, including the UNESCO-listed Moissac Abbey. To maximise on peace and quiet, the leisure facilities here have been thoughtfully separated from the accommodation area; if you’re not up for expending too much energy, head for the solarium for a spell of basking on the loungers provided, or amble off for a stroll around the lake. If you are indeed feeling active, you can jump in the pool and do a few lengths, bounce balls back and forth at the volleyball court, have a kick about on the football pitch, engage in a light game of badminton or ping pong, or an even lighter game of pétanque (the perfect evening pursuit, because the pitch is also illuminated at night). Fishing aficionados will be well sorted too at Des Étangs’ fenced private lake – make your way first to fisherman's cottage next to the lake to pick up a permit, then you’ll be good to go for hours of peaceful angling. While you’re off getting all relaxed or active, the kids will likely be found boinging at the bouncy castle and slide or hurtling down the dual-track and 56-metre loop-the-loop waterslide. Out of the water, they can head to the lakeshore and amuse themselves by observing the ducks and geese, or visit the site’s three ponies at the bottom of the accommodation field – and if they fancy a ride on one, they can do that there too. Should some time indoors be the order of the hour, at the bar a fab variety of toys is on hand to entertain small hands and brains, from wooden toys to cards, Playmobil, Barbie dolls and LEGO, as well as table football and slightly more cerebral chess and dominos. Kids’ club activities can be found in a dedicated chalet too, where they can get stuck in to arts and crafts activities to while away a few more minutes. In the evening, everything happens around the poolside snack bar and restaurant: until around 11:30pm, hang out on the restaurant terrace supping and scoffing local treats and wines and hobnobbing with other guests, or skip dinner altogether and have a swim in the illuminated pool.

Local attractions

Get active in the local area with several outdoorsy options: if you’re after something water-based, there’s a waterpark within 16 kilometres, while an outdoor pool and a lake with pedalos, motor boats, fishing and sailing is at St Nicolas de la Grave, 15 minutes’ drive away; if you’re up for travelling further afield, then can head to the Aveyron Gorges, an hour’s drive away, for a spot of canoeing. Out of the water, a treetop adventure park is in Montech, go-karting in Caudecoste, golf in Espalais and – for braver souls – an aerodrome in Gandalou. For a spot of history and culture, lots more is around to gawp and goggle at: the 12th-century abbeys of Belleperche and (UNESCO-listed) Moissac, the award-winning city of art and history, Montauban, and the pretty little village of Auvillar are all well worth checking out, as is Beaumont-de-Lomagne’s huge Gothic church and 14th-century timber market hall. For something educational and kid-friendly, Fermat Science is a good shout and well within reach: interactive museum exhibitions, games and workshops should keep the tiddlers suitably amused without cottoning on to the fact that they’re simultaneously being fed knowledge about maths and science.
