  • Friendly riverside site 10 minutes' walk from medieval Ambialet
  • Peaceful site with spectacular river and forest views
  • Fishing, bike hire, swimming and canoe safaris all available
Before you read on, it’s a fine idea to peruse the pics of Camp Vallée Du Tarn. That hammock and those fishing spots – if you’re seeking a peaceful place to pass the day in the Midi-Pyrénées, either of those will do very nicely indeed, n’est-çe-pas? Bring a stack of books and/or fishing kit and those choice spots could see you sorted for the duration if you wish. If, however, this small site’s spectacular river views have inspired you to see a bit more of the Tarn valley, this is a splendid place to base yourselves. Bike hire and canoe safaris can be had on site, wildlife walks are easily accessed in the surrounds, and it’s a leisurely 10-minute amble into the nearest village Ambialet (where there's a charging point for electric cars, plus two restaurants, a bar and a takeaway pizzeria). Reception has plenty of info on local attractions; if you need further recommendations, ask the owners for their tips. Life on site moves at a blissfully relaxed pace – friendly owners Erik and Monique maintain a book swap and wifi connection, and are happy for you to stoke up a barbecue or campfire for a lazy evening. They'll also sort you out with breakfast bits to get your day off to a tasty start, and host a communal dinner of barbecue food, pasta, fish, burgers and other dishes three times a week. For foodie stock-ups, it's half an hour's drive to the supermarkets in Albi, and several local markets are close by: ask on site for details. Please note that there are no facilities for chemical waste or grey water disposal on site, although there are service points nearby where this is possible.

Local attractions

Pottering off to little villages is a popular way to spend some time around here. Once you’ve meandered around medieval Ambialet (10 minutes’ walk) and climbed up to its priory for some fab views, you might also like to check out Cordes-sur-Ciel (50 minutes' drive), the gorgeous Brousse-le-Château (half an hour) or Coupiac (25 minutes), where the nippers can get dressed up to immerse themselves in medieval life at the château. Albi half an hour away is another excellent place for a day out. Wander through the half-timbered streets and visit the cathedral if history’s your thing; those with an eye for culture and colour will want to drop in on the art museum filled with works by local lad Toulouse-Lautrec and maybe sashay through the fashion museum too. Venture a little further to Gaillac (45 minutes) for days spent wandering among the wineries and vineyards and a trip to the wine museum, or head to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park (45 minutes) for hikes, wildlife watching and other active days.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch (XL)

Liked: This campsite is idyllic. A perfect retreat away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. The hosts Eric & Monique were fantastic and couldn't do enough for you. We stayed of a week and had three meals all cooked by the hosts which were excellent - especially the fish night. The river was beautiful to swim in there are kayaks to mess about in -we loved it here and was sad to leave. Showers and toilets were always clean even though they are outdoors. When we are in this area again we will definitely book again - loved every minute! Thanks Eric & Monique x
