Splish, splash, splosh… if you’re the kind of family that can happily while away an hour or few in and around the water, you’ll be chuffed to hear that such antics can carry on whatever the weather at Le Clos du Moulin. Yes indeed, the generous folk here have kitted their place out with not one but two fab pools – an outdoor one with spacious sun terrace for the hot days and an indoor one (with waters heated to a balmy 29ºC) for the less clement ones. And that’s not the full list of water-based options: guests can also sign up for a bit of spa pampering (a hot tub, sauna and Turkish bath await for a small fee), or borrow a bike for the 10-minute jaunt down to the seaside in La Bernerie-en-Retz. Need a break from the water? (It’ll happen sooner or later…) There’s also a playground, a games room and a pétanque court, plus a whole heap of kid-friendly activities if you’re here in the summer hols. And there are the outings to consider too: horse riding, sand yachting, golf and zoo trips are all easy options, as are visits to medieval Guérande or the cycle-path paradise of Noirmoutier. The bar-restaurant is open for meals, sociable drinks and takeaways throughout the main holiday season; supermarkets, restaurants and a particularly fine ice cream parlour are a couple of kilometres away in town.

Local attractions

Time to get active? Barrel down to La Bernerie-en-Retz (10 minutes by bike; half an hour on foot) to learn the art of sailing or sand yachting, or meander to Les Moutiers-en-Retz (five minutes’ drive) to saddle up for seaside horse rides. Golf and sea kayaking are 15 minutes’ drive away in Pornic, as are the treetop trails of Pornic Aventure. While you’re in Pornic, it’s worth taking a tour of its castle and old port; if seafaring life floats your boat it’s a half-hour drive to Saint-Nazaire to see cruise ships and the like under construction at one of the world’s biggest shipyards, and visit the submarine museum. Should you prefer your seaside days to be on a simpler scale, take the 40-minute drive to the island of Noirmoutier for sea-view cycle rides and fishing. For family days out, take your would-be knights to patrol the ramparts of medieval Guérande (45 minutes’ drive) and your safari explorers to Planète Sauvage zoo or Legendia Parc (both 25 minutes).
