  • 2km from a beach to forage for oysters, mussels and clams
  • Pool, fitness area and summer entertainment for all ages
  • Snack bar and food shop
How does foraging for your own mussels, oysters and clams sound to you? While on holiday on the French coast, toes in damp sand – and then sizzling the lot up among a good glug of wine back at your coastal site that evening? Have the tasty lot with a stay at the Loire-Atlantique's Camping Les Vallons de l'Océan, a couple of kilometres from the wide beach of Portmain, where the mentioned molluscs can be ferreted for in low tide. Or might you prefer a seafood platter dished up to you already done? Les Vallons de l'Océan is also only four kilometres from medieval city of Pornic and the many restaurants among its cobbled streets for some of the same. It's also near the old town of Guérande for yet more (Guérande overlooks the famed peninsula salt marshes too, so pick up some souvenir Fleur de sel salt at the town market to bring back for cooking at home). The famed island of Noirmoutier is to the south just off the Vendée coast. Back at base, Les Vallons de l'Océan has a heated outdoor pool with waterslides to keep all ages busy, along with a multi-sports field and miniature golf. Entertainment is organised in July and August. There's also a launderette, wifi and a play room. The site has a snack bar and a restaurant where a varied choice of dishes and desserts are offered to eat in or take away. There's also a bar to cool off after a day at the swimming pool or beach, and a grocery store.

Local attractions

Medieval towns, beaut beaches and old and famed salt marshes are the lie of the land around here, along with a good range of local biking and hiking trails and wildlife watching around the coast and the Guérande peninsula. Have a potter around Pornic first, for those seafood restaurants and its old port; next up should be Guérande, for more restaurants, fifteenth-century walls and the Collegiate Church of Saint Aubin. For eating alfresco in town, the cafés and restaurants around the church are top picks. If you're interested in how the Guérande peninsula became a salt scavenging spot, the salt marsh museum in Batz-sur-Mer tells its salty tale, and if you want to buy samples, the marsh workers sell coarse salt and sea salt flakes around the peninsula from June to September. Another famed destination in the region is the island of Noirmoutier, with twelfth-century castle, old port, Friday market, and sailing, fishing and windsurfing in its waters. Plenty of cycle and walking paths meander around the island too, so hire a bike to take around the Chaise forest, or pick up some info from the local tourist office about where best to islandly go.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: A lovely clean and well-run site. We received a warm, helpful welcome and stayed on a large pitch. Pool was quiet at the time we were there towards the end of the season and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Disliked: Nothing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Excellent, heated pool and water slides, great on-site food, good toilet/shower facilities, friendly, helpful staff.

Disliked: The entertainment went in later than advertised and was very loud on some nights. Closing half the toilets on 27 August when the site was still mostly full was crazy. Thankfully we were just leaving.

Does not quieten down until long after the 10.30pm advertised.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The site was kept very clean, pool area was nice. Pitch was fairly well shaded. Site is in a nice location which is ideal for visiting Nantes and pornic Farm was lovely to visit, bread freshly baked each morning, nice bar area we didn’t eat at the restaurant on site though

Disliked: Felt that we weren’t welcomed on arrival as we were asked to check the pitch first as they didn’t think our caravan would fit despite me giving van sizes 5 months prior to visiting. We were on a pitch directly by the bar and pool so was quite noisy especially with large groups of youths outside until early hours. No easily accessible water at the lower pitches we had to walk up a steep hill to collect and empty grey waste. Pitches quite small, ok if you’re travelling with a small unit but not so good for British style vans and awnings Had difficulty with phone signal where we were pitched

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good location at the top of the island, next to the rather splendid lighthouse and a beautiful beach which almost feels like a private facility! There are also a collection of boutiques, bars and restaurants at the lighthouse but food was average at best and shops expensive. The exception was a lovely ice cream parlour which always had queues outside. Good WC and shower blocks and useful facilities like a cafe ‘hut’ (open in the mornings for patisseries and coffee etc) and a washing machine cabin too.

Disliked: Many pitches are very close together and not all have shade, and you’re pitching on a mix of sand and scrubbed grass which can be dusty, but you are next to the beach! Busy campsite but a nice vibe and friendly staff.
