  • Five-hectare park on an island on the Loire river
  • 20 minutes' walk from the centre of Saumur, with views of the château
  • Wellness centre with spa, sauna and hammam, plus outdoor pools
So, Saumur is it? How terribly sensible of you – it’s a fably handsome place straddling the Loire river, with a gorgeous medieval centre, a turreted château and heaps of purveyors of the local sparkling wine for regular refreshment. It’s not just townie attractions though; the surrounding area has a plethora of fun things to keep you happily active for days on end, with its châteaux, bike routes, troglodyte village, canoe trips, medieval villages, zoo and military horse show just some of the top picks around here. Shun the very centre of town for your stay in favour of greenery at Camping l'Ile d’Offard, in a five-hectare park on an island on the Loire river. You’ll still be able to gaze up at the château from here, but you’ll also have heaps of family-friendly space and facilities to keep everyone content at all times. Kids can clamber and climb at the playground, bounce on the giant inflatable or join games of volleyball or football at the sports pitch. That’s assuming you’ve not already lost them to the attractions of the kids’ club that runs five days a week in high season, of course. If you have indeed settled them in for games, crafts and the like, perhaps that’s your cue to nip off to the wellness centre to use the sauna, hammam and hot tub or be pleasingly pummelled by a master masseur. Perhaps a game of pétanque or table tennis might tickle your fancy. Or you might prefer simply to lounge poolside, awaiting their return so you can all dive into the pools – a big one, a small one and a teenies' one to give safe splashing for all the famille. Should you fancy strolling into town, it’s about a 20-minute walk to get to all the restaurants and shops. If, however, you’re in no mood for traipsing, you can lurk on site to dine at the restaurant or pick up takeaways from the snack bar. There’s also a bar to furnish you with all the cool drinks you need as you relax on the open-air terrace or throw yourself into some form of organised entertainment.

Local attractions

In Saumur itself, wander through the network of little medieval streets and visit the château, which overlooks the river and was once used as a prison. Also in town are a motor museum and a tank museum. A little further out (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is the famed Cadre Noir military riding academy, where you can watch a splendid display of dressage-style horsemanship. Also worth a visit is the Château de Brézé, 20 minutes drive away, to discover the hidden dwelling lurking under the main castle. Bioparc Doué-la-Fontaine (a 25-minute drive from the site) has a rather unique claim to fame, as it’s the only troglodyte zoo in the world. Wander through the winding rocky tunnels and past waterfalls to see all sorts of animals including hippos, giraffes and monkeys. There are lots of ways to get out and about into the countryside around here. There are around 800 kilometres of cycle paths in the Loire area, so plenty of scope to pedal your way around the area; hire bikes from the site if you’ve not brought your own. Or you could take to the waters in a canoe or kayak from a watersports centre up at the other end of the island (20 minutes’ walk) to paddle along the wide, calm Loire river. If you’re partial to a few sips of sparkling wine, take an hour’s walk from the site to get to the vineyards of the Saint-Hilare-Saint-Florent area just north of the city. A particularly tasty treat here is to take a tour of Ackerman, the oldest producer in town – wander through the troglodyte cellars to see the wines and explore the art exhibitions that pepper the underground tunnels. Plus of course you’ll get to sample the wares. Cheers!
