  • Vintage themed site with kayak hire by the Sarthe river
  • Caves, canyons and Le Mans race circuit within 45 minutes' drive
  • Retro caravan snack bar; vintage films and entertainments in summer
Step back in time on the banks of the Sarthe... The folk at Camping L’Oeil dans Le Rétro have a special feeling for the past, and they’ve created a site that’s all about retro relaxation amid fine country surroundings. With tree-lined gardens and Les Deux Fonds, a tributary of the Sarthe river running right past the site, you’ll feel immersed in nature from the moment you arrive. Hire kayaks from the site to explore the waters, or head over to the peaceful meadow area, where you can lounge in antique recliners amid a sensory symphony of herbs, wild flowers and birds. When you’re in need of sustenance, step onto Le P’tit Bistro, the site’s restored caravan-diner, for snacks, drinks, ice creams and groceries amidst a little museum of old time curios and knickknacks. There’s no need to leave the past behind when the sun sets either, with vintage themed entertainments and silent movie nights laid on in the summer months. When you do decide to step into the 21st century, it’s a couple of minutes’ walk into the village of Vanoise and a five-minute drive to Parcé-sur-Sarthe where there are shops and supermarkets as well as numerous places to sip, sup and gaze at the Sarthe.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Everything - what a wonderful site! Absolutely gorgeous spot on the banks of the river. Peaceful, relaxing and idyllic. The retro caravans gave it a quirky feel which we loved. The owner was super friendly. Nothing much in the village (apart from a restaurant which looked great and we will try next time) but nearby Parce sur Sarthe had everything we needed (including fabulous boulangerie) for our onward journey the next day.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The guy running the place was super friendly and helpful (and had great glasses!) the site was small and in a great setting right next to the river and our pitch was close to electric and water. The retro vans were ace, I'll be coming back to stay in one another time!

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: We stumbled across this labour of love and we are pleased that we did! This was a wonderful site and the perfect stop off with our three children and two dogs. The sight was clean and the pitches perfectly positioned to enjoy the array of beautiful retro campers. A park close by and plenty of space of all.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly and quirky site. So quiet and peaceful. Good size pitches with options of being in the sun or shade.

Disliked: Location was a little hard to find as the sign is small, but it is at the back of the car park.

Local attractions

Passing right by the site and featuring in most local place names, the Sarthe is an obvious port of call for boating, dipping, fishing, and bike rides and strolls along the banks. You needn’t stray very far from the river or your comfy quarters to see some interesting sights: take in the medieval frescoes and mosaic gardens at Asnières-sur-Vègre five minutes’ drive away, then make for the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter in Solesmes (10 minutes), a 10th-century pile that’s home to sacred art and (if you time it right) soul stirring services in Gregorian chant. The 10th century seems like recent times compared to the stillness of Saulges (half an hour): wander the wooded canyons amid black sheep and aurochs then visit the prehistoric paintings in the caves. If you prefer things noisier, make time to visit Le Mans, whose race track hosts regular car and truck meets and a sizeable museum as well as the famed 24 Hours circuit. There’s a go-kart track next door if you want a race yourself. Should you be seeking peace after that, the lakeside leisure base at Mansigné (half an hour) has pedalos, fishing and simple snoozes on the beach alongside bike rides and nature walks. Also half an hour away, for wildlife that’s a touch wilder, you can hang with the hippos and beam at the bears at Zoo de La Flèche.
