  • Friendly family site three kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaum
  • A few minutes from a watersports lake and sandy beach
  • Snack bar with terrace, miniature golf, play area and bouncy castles
Strewth, this Sarthe site is rightly sorted for small types. Camping Les Tournesols is a properly family-friendly place, not only crammed with stuff for kids to get stuck into, but with a knowledgeable, welcoming team who'll happily assist on advising you on local destinations desirable for your own brand of munchkins. And if your parlez vous français isn't quite up to scratch? The necessary info can be imparted in anglais aussi. Les Tournesols is a rural site, a couple of kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaume. Your small sorts should find loads to bounce around at on site (inflatables included, natch), but they'll clamour to get out and about too when they find out what's in the surroundings: a lake a few minutes' drive away has fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, or you could just bask or build sandcastles at sandy Sillé beach. Woodland hikes are close by too, there are loads of walking and cycling routes in the region, and peaceful gardens galore are around Le Mans, the second greenest area in France. Facilities on site include a heated pool (open in July and August), a miniature golf course, a play area and pétanque and volleyball courts. Entertainment for all the family, from foodie nights to jitterbugging at the site disco is laid on in high season, at the snack bar which also dishes up fresh food made to order. For more of your foodie essentials, fresh bread is delivered to the site every morning.

Local attractions

The small fortified town of Sainte-Suzanne, on a rocky outcrop above the Erve river, is just under half an hour's drive from the site. This mighty pretty place has an 11th-century castle, ancient streets lined with handsome buildings, and a fine selection of shops, cafés and restaurants. The Musée d'Auditoire tells the tale of the town including its besieging by the men of William the Conqueror. Le Mans, 45 minutes away, is also a must, for its splendid cathedral (even the kids should like a look at this) and its half-timbered houses from the 14th to 16th centuries. The most famed of these is the red-painted Maison du Pilier Rouge on Grand Rue, a good place to snap a scenic shot. If you're around in July or August, stick around into the evening for the Le Mans light show in the Old Town, a spectacular spectacle that should enthral all ages. If you're a film buff, you might want to see how many movie settings you can spy around the city, such as that of Cyrano de Bergerac: see if you can nose out the right location.

Liked: The site is big and has everything you need.

Disliked: We booked 14th june, before I booked I checked the pool was open, this was the only reason I booked this site, to have a swim after a long drive. But the pool wasn't open and not even clear ready. We drive 30 mins out of our way get a pool too. It said on the site the pool would be open in June

Electric grass pitch (XXL)

Liked: Wonderfully landscaped site with winding paths and lots of trees. Very friendly staff, excellent facilities and close to a small town with shops, bakers, etc.
