A peaceful place in green French countryside, set on a scenic river, and under an hour from splendid Paris – how très bon. It's all at the Sarthe department's Camping Le Vieux Moulin, a small family-run site alongside the Sarthe river within walking distance of the village of Neuville-Sur-Sarthe, five kilometres from the centre of the historic town of Le Mans. The village railway station has services to Le Mans (seven minutes), with onward travel to major towns and cities including Paris, 58 minutes away on the TVG. Le Vieux Moulin is under new management and was renovated to reopen in June 2017 after being closed for eight years. Set in four riverside hectares, it has over 100 mature trees of at least 50 different species, home to many a red squirrel as well as bats, butterflies and lots of birds. Facilities include a pool, a pétanque court, table tennis and a playing field for ball games (bats and balls are available for free; a small refundable deposit is required). Quieter areas away from the main activities are dotted all around if you'd rather snooze under the sun or read a book. A supermarket, pharmacy, patisserie, hairdresser, butcher/delicatessen and bar-restaurant are all at Neuville-Sur-Sarthe.

Local attractions

Le Mans commercial centre is a short car journey (five kilometres) and has a variety of shops and restaurants as well as activities including a multiscreen cinema, karting, bowling, laser tag and soft play. As boy and girl racers will know, the town's best known for the 24-hour du Mans track and museum; you should also have a splash at the Atlantides Aquatic Centre (Le Mans) with several pools and a spa area with Jacuzzi, whirlpool, steam room and two saunas, and nosy around the old areas such as the well-preserved Old Town and Roman wall. Karting and bowling are both within 10 kilometres, at the three circuits south of the Bugatti Circuit at Karting International Mans, and the 26 lanes as well as snooker and pool at Bowling Le Mans. 11 kilometres away, hire a boat in July or August to take up the Sarthe, to see the medieval and Renaissance houses, the church of the Prado, the cathedral and the Roman walls. You can hire bikes and canoes, tandems, freight bicycles, scooters, child trailers and baby seats at Vel'Nature 13 kilometres away, also home to the Veltram, which allows seven people to ride together. Or pootle along to the canoeing club at Le Mans (14 kilometres), or to TepaCap Outdoor Adventures, for treetop adventuring, rock climbing, paintballing, kayaking, orientation and laser games, 16 kilometres away.
