  • Lakeside site in a national forest, a kilometre from a big sandy beach
  • Heated pool with deckchairs alongside; watersports centre next door
  • Snack wagon, bike hire, playground and grocery shop
Settle down in Sarthe for a lakeside site in a national forest at Camping Lac de Sillé, near Sillé-le-Guillaume about half an hour from Le Mans: whether it's forest hikes or watery sports you're after, you'll access outdoorsy activities of all sorts from here. The woodland around the site is part of the national forest of Sillé, covering over 3,350 hectares of green and peaceful land popular for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, ziplining and fishing. A leisure and watersports centre is right next door for arranging rafting, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. Start off with an amble over to the friendly team at reception, for tourist info on the vast amount of stuff to see and do in the region. There are books on the area here too, as well as a free internet point and board games for peaceful afternoons. Bikes can be hired next to reception to take out on the lakeside paths or on the trails further into the forest. Next? The heated pool, perhaps, with deckchairs and parasols available alongside, and then perhaps a stroll to the snack wagon for a bite to eat on its terrace or to take away to a quiet spot by the lake...? Volleyball, table tennis, table football and pétanque are also around to try; there's a sandy playground to occupy the kids, and an entertainment and activities programme runs in July and August with archery, forest pony trekking, sports tournaments and a kids' club on weekday mornings. Concerts, theatre, open-air cinema and themed dinners are held on summer evenings.

Local attractions

You don't have to go far to access spectacular Pays de la Loire forest, countryside and beach days from the site, or to drive far to get to famed regional highlights like Fresnay-sur-Sarthe and department capital Le Mans. The red town of Le Mans is a green space too – famed as the second greenest in France, in fact – so seek out some garden time after a stroll around the Old Town and the Roman walls. Among its many green areas are the Jardins Pierre de Ronsard, the Arche de la Nature and the Jardins des Plantes, covering five hectares. Getting into the countryside, trek along to the Alpes Mancelles and the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park, a land of moorland and forest, orchards and rapidly flowing rivers: look out for deer, rabbits, hares and wild boar on your scenic travels.
