  • Stunning luxury site around an 18th-century castle and lake
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Le Mans and two hours from Paris
  • Free fishing, pool, château bar, restaurant, farm and free tours
Pretty, peaceful and in spectacular surrounds including a château and a fishing lake – ooh la la and then some. Scenic, friendly and fably equipped Camping Le Château de Chanteloup is near Sille-Le-Philippe in the Sarthe department, about 25 minutes' drive from the famed racing track of Le Mans and two hours from Paris. It's on a carefully preserved 22 hectares with meadows, woodland, gardens, an 18th-century castle and a lake for canoeing and angling. Fishing is popular here (and free), so pack your kit and get ready to land carp, roach and tench. There's stacks to do at this luxury park, from strolling or cycling around the grounds to getting active with hours of swimming, badminton, ping pong, mountain biking and pétanque. A football pitch, two volleyball courts and a basketball hoop are also on site: do hone your skills before arriving as friendly competitions are regularly held in these (as well as in pétanque, fishing, basketball and ping pong). More restfully, take yourself off to the pool, or simply have an early snooze instead, as a kids' club for ages four to 10 is run every day in high season by bilingual staff. An evening restaurant and takeaway are in the farm courtyard, and the Chanteloup bar is open throughout the season in the west wing of the castle. For peaceful retreats, a billiards table, TV room and book exchange are in the east wing. Free guided tours of the grounds are available. Guests are also welcome to potter around the miniature farm at the entrance to the property, to coo over the critters and pick up a clutch of fresh eggs.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful location, very friendly staff speaking excellent English, and willing to tolerate bad French, and they manage to cultivate a friendly party atmosphere (without being too rowdy) even in a Monday night! Also well appointed with shop, restaurant and take away, as well as bakery in the morning. Clean and tidy facilities, regularly cleaned

Disliked: I only booked one night! A bit pricey

Liked: Beautiful well kept campsite. The facilities were great. There was some lovely cycling tracks round the campsite. The bar and seating area was lovely.

Disliked: We would have liked to have seen a greater selection in the shop and maybe more reasonable prices.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: For our first camp trip to France we couldn't have asked for anything more, we loved our 6 night stay. Would highly recommend the Saturday evening bbq. The kids loved the pool, great area in the shade to play ping pong and petanque too.

Local attractions

You may decide just to stay on site with all the kingly and queenly options at your regal fingertips, but do make some time to get out and about as well – as with the site, there's lots to do in the Sarthe surroundings. Zip along to Le Mans for what the Camping Le Château de Chanteloup owners declare is the most beaut Gallo-Roman spot in France: this medieval city is full of houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. The stained glass windows in the cathedral should enthrall even non-historic kids, and the Nuit des Chimères light and sound shows in July and August are a must-see if you're around these parts in summer. Le Mans racing track is home to the oldest sports car endurance race in the world (since 1923, petrolhead peeps) as well as the track's motorsports museum. Also much recommended is Ferté-Bernard, involved in the world's first motoring Grand Prix way back in 1903; the small city of Montmirail, and traditional villages such as Asnières-sur-Vègre and Le Grand Lucé.
