One day (fingers crossed) perhaps you’ll win the lottery and be able to take unlimited holidays. Until such frabjous day presents itself, however, the next best thing may well be to make the most of every droplet of holiday time by settling somewhere within easy reach of heaps of activities and days out. Venture to Vendée site Le Domaine de Bellevue and the local options for antics are many and varied – take your pick from beaches, châteaux, canoe trips, mountain biking, watersports, zoo days, a waterpark, an adventure park… and the excellent Puy du Fou theme park’s only an hour away too. Facilities on site are likely to demand a bit of attention as well: kids’ and adults activities run throughout high season (spring and summer holidays, and over All Souls in November) and no doubt the nippers will note the presence of waterslides and a water play area at the covered pool, a football pitch, a beach volleyball court and a pétanque court, plus the play area with its big trampoline. Calmer times can be had too, hanging out with the gang (pigs, goats, ponies and hens) at the mini farm or trying your luck in one of the two fishing ponds. Something you’ll not need to fill much time with is the hunt for food, as there’s a snack bar on site, and you’re a piffling five minutes’ drive from Saint-Christophe-du-Ligneron, where you can stock up on grocery supplies and bakery goodies or settle down for a bistro supper.

Local attractions

Time to hit the seaside… a half-hour drive will take you to Saint Gilles Croix de Vie for a splendid sandy beach and watersports including windsurfing, surfing and scuba diving (novices welcome, as instruction is on hand). Boat trips to Yeu island from the harbour are popular, as are days spent zooming down the waterslides of the Atlantic Toboggan waterpark, just north of the town. More activity? You may like to try jetskiing, banana boating or mountain biking at Planete Racing (five minutes’ drive), or maybe pedalling your way along the 10-kilometre vélorail track at Commequiers (10 minutes). Perhaps a canoe trip through the Route du Sel salt marshes (20 minutes) will be to your taste, or the adrenaline-packed antics including treetop trails, water jumps and paintballing at the Indian Forest adventure park (40 minutes)...? Cram a little culture in with a visit to the Renaissance château in Apremont (10 minutes’ drive), or give in to your wild streak by setting off to Planète Sauvage safari park (40 minutes). Even if history never did it for you at school, the spectacular shows at Puy du Fou theme park (an hour) are well worth the trip.
