Dreaming of an active beach-side getaway? You’ll be sleeping like a baby at Camping le Tropicana, a family-friendly site in a wooded area 10 minutes’ drive from Saint-Jean-de-Monts in the Vendée area of Pays de la Loire. Le Tropicana is a paradise for watersports – head to Saint-Jean-de-Monts for stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and canoeing, swim over to the beach five minutes from site, or stay on site to splash around the three outdoor pools (and one indoor pool) and zip down the waterslides. If you’d prefer to stay dry, there’s plenty else on site to keep you entertained: work out in the gym, challenge your family and friends to tennis or table tennis, rack up the points in pétanque or head to the multisports field for a game, then unwind in the wellness centre’s sauna, steam room or hot tub. If you fancy exploring the surrounding area, follow the walking and cycling trails into the woods, or make your way to Nelly’s Ranch to trot around the nearby forests and beaches on horseback. Once you’ve worked up an appetite (and how could you not have by now), fire up the barbecue and pile it high with goodies from the nearby supermarket or, if you’re at le Tropicana during the high season, you can grab a table at the bar-restaurant instead of cooking for yourself. Otherwise, if you want a break from cheffing, there are plenty of restaurants within easy reach.

Local attractions

This part of Vendée is a treasure trove of theme parks, water parks and amusement parks to keep you busy during your hols: Beau Land Park’s fairground rides are only five minutes’ drive from Camping le Tropicana, as is Atlantic Toboggan waterpark, and Explora Parc’s treetop adventures is 15 minutes away. If that hasn’t given you your fill, make your way to Noirmoutier – 40 minutes from site – for the Océanile waterpark, then stick around for the l’Île aux Papillions (butterfly gardens), the aquarium, the château and tons of beaches. Stay out in nature with trips to Écomusée du Daviaud for the history of the marshes around le Tropicana, then to the environmental awareness site at Biotopia, the wind sculptures at Vent Garden, and the Jardin des Olfacties, a botanical garden that specialises in smells. Keep the kids on side at Vendée Miniature – where they can explore a typical village of the region as giants – and at the Planète Sauvage safari park, then give yourself one final treat with an excursion to the Logis de la Chabotterie manor house, all well within an hour of le Tropicana.
