Rather sensibly for a place that offers hammam and massage waterjets in its swish indoor pool complex, a babysitting service is at Camping L'Abri des Pins. Try to avoid overly gleeful cackles as you hand your small sorts over to the expert team (or to the expert lot at the kids' club), before fleeing to the warmth and waters of this relaxing spot. If you prefer to roam kidfree outdoors (also a smart option in the sunny Vendée), use the stunning heated outdoor pool area with slides for more watery hours, take your buffed bod to the gym if you're feeling not too idle, or potter/ pedal the several excellent walking and cycling paths around the grounds. Just off site, Camping L'Abri des Pins borders a dense forest and is 700 metres from the nearest beach of the popular and sandy seaside resort of Saint-Jean-De-Monts. Once the kids are released back to you, family-friendly activities ranging from sports tournaments to magic shows to karaoke and music evenings are to hand during summer afternoons and evenings. You could also challenge offspring to pétanque or table tennis, or cast an indulgent eye on them while they bound around the play area, bouncy castle or games room. Camping L'Abri des Pins also has a bar-restaurant and communal barbecues.

Local attractions

L'Abri des Pins is next to a forest and close to cycle paths; bikes can be hired on site. Biker types could also cycle to the village of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (20 kilometres along a flat route) or take their wheels to one of the nearby islands: Noirmoutier (30 kilometres) and Île d'Yeu (40 kilometres). Less strenuously for your cycling legs, you can get to Saint-Jean-De-Monts town centre within five kilometres, saving plenty of energy for arranging sessions or instruction in watersports such as sailing, kitesurfing and kayaking. Or bike along to the local adventure and animal parks, including Explora Parc (four kilometres), Atlantic Toboggan (11 kilometres) and Youpla Land (14 kilometres). Take little beasties and animal fans to the nature parks and gardens around the area: try Biotopia or the Jardin du Vent, both five kilometres away; La Ferme des Pommettes (10 kilometres); L’île aux Papillons on Noirmoutier, and the salt marshes immediately around the site. Planète Sauvage is around 55 minutes' drive away.
