  • Stay at a family site in the grounds of a stunning 19th-century castle
  • Cyclists' paradise: on-site bike rental, access to Vélodyssée route
  • Pool, waterslides, fishing lake, miniature golf, massages all on site
Spectacular château, peaceful countryside and loads to keep you busy… Ticking all the boxes? Make your way to Château la Forêt, a site in the grounds of a stunning 19th-century castle on the edge of Saint Julien des Lands in the Vendée region of Pays de la Loire. With so much scenic countryside to cycle through, you’ll be glad of the on-site bike rental at Château la Forêt. There are more than 1,000 kilometres of cycling trails in the Vendée, including part of the Vélodyssée long-distance route, and the top-notch tracks on Île d’Yeu are also just a boat ride away… All that sounds fab, but you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave the site. You can take a dip in one of the pools, have a go on the waterslides, cast a line at the fishing lake, putt around on the miniature golf course, rack up the points in pétanque or take to the sports fields, then relax with a massage. Phew! Try saying all of that in one breath… Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a quick bite or takeaway at the snack bar, or head to the restaurant for something more substantial, then wash it down with a drink at the bar. Prefer to take care of meals yourself? You can fire up the barbecue and pile it high with goodies from the on-site grocery store or one of the nearby shops, or you can nab yourself a table at one of the restaurants within 10 minutes of Château la Forêt.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Local patisserie and bar/restaurant. Staff were friendly.

Disliked: On site restaurant didn’t allow bookings and was difficult to get a table. When we finally did, we only received half our meals before giving up and paying the bill. Absolutely no privacy in showers/WC area. We’re reasonably clean, but nothing special. Pitch was located too far from reception and entrance. Swimming facilities were enjoyed by the kids.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Cleanliness of site and toilet/wash rooms, nice pools. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Disliked: Grass pitch surface was flat but had quite a number of holes so getting a table or chair to sit without rocking difficult. No wi-fi available on pitch, they were having issues we were advised. Told it would be fixed by Tuesday (mid-holidy) but no functioning service became available,.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The location is great, easy to travel to and in the grounds of a beautiful chateau.

Disliked: As we were on a tent pitch we needed to use the shower and toilet facilities. These are probably the worst we have seen and we have stayed on many sites with several companies. The blocks are old, infested with termites, flies in all cubicles, missing or empty soap dispensers.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large pitches with water and electricity, there are hedges and trees separating each pitch. There are premium pitches with a wooden terrace and bbq which you pay extra for; we had a standard pitch which was large enough. Staff very helpful and friendly. The toilets and showers were very clean. There is a lovely pool with slides and the château buildings have a restaurant, bar gym and sauna etc. There is also a large outdoor pool which was closed when we visited in early June. A huge adventure park for adults and children is next to the campsite which looked a lot of fun. There seemed plenty to keep children entertained and happy. The site is 5 minute walk from the town unfortunately the restaurant there was closed until mid June . Supermarket is about 10 minutes away by car.

Disliked: The fact it is basically a holiday camp was not for us, we prefer a different type of holiday now our children have flown the nest. The site was noisy during the day, but mainly children having fun which was not an issue at all. Be aware that the Chateau hosts occasional weddings ( which was lovely to see) but the music stopped at 2am. There was also a conference on a different day and some the attendees partied very late. The campers were all quiet by 10.30 it was only the functions that were very loud. The Wi-Fi is free for 3 hours at the cafe or you can pay extra, we found the Wi-Fi at the cafe very slow. No waste water disposal for the camper vans.

Local attractions

You don’t have to be an amateur Tour de France competitor to explore this part of the Vendée – you can make the 10-minute drive to Lac du Jaunay for tons of hiking trails (including a 12-kilometre jaunt starting in La Chapelle-Hermier), or venture as far as Les Sables d’Olonne where you can join a boat tour of the salt marshes. While in Les Sables, taking to the water is a must. The seaside town is the starting point of the Vendée Global solo race, so it stands to reason that this is a prime spot for learning to sail. There’s more to the town than the ocean though: visit the Museum of Shells, explore the Sainte-Croix abbey or take the kids to the Sables zoo. There’s loads more for the kids to get their teeth into – less than five minutes from the site, Grand Défi will keep them entertained for ages, with tree-top adventuring, paintball, laser tag and pony rides. If that’s not enough for them, they can play at giants in Vendée Miniature or spend a day at the Puy du Fou historical theme park, just under an hour away.
