  • Peaceful rural site in France's second-largest wetland area
  • Large fishing pond filled with carp, roach, tench, pike and perch
  • Covered pool plus petting zoo with friendly donkeys, goats and pigs
Deep in the countryside near Saint-Valérien in the Vendée region of west France, this pleasantly peaceful site lies around 55 kilometres from the seaside resort and attractions of La Rochelle. Its location among the country’s second-largest wetland area, the Marais Poitevin, means that this is a prime place for keeping eyes peeled for birds as you cruise around in traditional flat-bottomed boats or canoes. Set around a three-hectare fishing lake with carp, roach, tench, pike and perch, the park is hailed by previous guests as being highly peaceful and pristinely preened; a heated pool with a retractable roof sorts your on-site downtime swimmingly, and animal fanciers of all ages will be kept more than amused at the park’s petting zoo and its donkeys, goats and friendly hogs. Several cycle routes and walking trails for all abilities lie nearby, and you can explore them solo or as part of an organised group outing from the site if you’re feeling social; the area’s waterways can also be investigated via canoe. In high season, family-friendly entertainment is organised by the team on selected evenings, and food trucks selling tasty local eats visit at weekends.

Local attractions

Often referred to as France’s ‘Green Venice’, the Marais Poitevin area’s marshlands can to be explored by canoes or by bike, both of which you can hire locally – just ask the des Rulières team to help you organise this when you arrive on site. Alternatively, if you’d rather be chauffeured around, trips in the region’s traditional flat-bottomed boats and horse-drawn carriages are also an option. Attractions over in the coastal city of La Rochelle around an hour’s drive away include Europe's largest aquarium with more than 12,000 marine animals covering 600 species. Also take a day trip to the spectacular beaches, village oyster joints and lighthouses of the five kilometre-wide Île de Ré, all of which can be toured easily by bike. Other attractions close enough for family day trips include the thrill rides of Puy du Fou theme park and the animal enclosures of La Palmyre Zoo, trips to the Île d'Aix and, nearby, cruises around the former military stronghold and prison of Fort Boyard.
