  • Scenic and green landscaped setting close to Saint-Quentin
  • 30km from the Museum of the Great War and the American Cemetery
  • Fishing pond with carp, tench, eel, pike and roach
Fisherfolk rejoice. For angling options aplenty are at the green and landscaped park of Camping du Vivier aux Carpes in Picardy: you can fish in the grounds, and more is available at the Canal de Saint-Quentin 10 minutes' walk away. (Not licensed for French fishing? The Camping du Vivier aux Carpes owners can hook you up with the relevant permit.) Whoppers of carp, tench, pike, roach and eel have been landed at the Camping du Vivier aux Carpes pond by canny anglers over the years, including a 19.50kg carp that bagged the site record. If you're a non-angler, plenty of pretty scenery is around to feast your peepers on, or you can hire a bike to pedal along to the nature spotting, fitness trail, play areas, beach and canoeing of the small lake a few kilometres away. Camping du Vivier aux Carpes is in a wildlife haven 20 minutes' drive from the Aisne town of Saint-Quentin, about 30 kilometres from Great War routes and memorials, and an hour and 20 minutes by car from Lille. It has spacious pitches, most separated by hedges and all supplied with electricity. Communal facilities include a big leisure room with sofas, pool tables and books in different languages, and table tennis, a play area and a pétanque court outdoors. A snack bar with terrace is open in high season. Fishing on site is chargeable by a daily rate. The Camping du Vivier aux Carpes owners also point out that affectionate guests (aka mosquitoes) holiday at the pond, so do bring along your mozzie repellents and sprays.

Local attractions

It's cultural heritage ahoy around the Seraucourt-le-Grand area, whether you're after old towns or World War I heritage and museums. The Museum of the Great War and the American Cemetery and Memorial are within half an hour's drive; ask at the site reception to see if any discounted offers or tours are available at the time of your visit. Saint-Quentin, nicknamed the art deco city, is a good option for a day out for all ages: there's an old abbey and a 16th-century town hall to see, a butterfly museum with around 20,000 exhibits, and art deco buildings around the Rue de la Sellerie (look out for the post office and the lighthouses on Isle Bridge. More actively, the Aéro Club De L'aisne is five minutes' drive away and horse riding in Trefcon as well as golfing in Saint-Quentin-Mesnil are each within 15 minutes. Walking, hiking, cycling and canoeing are in the immediate surroundings. For a beach day, drive 25 minutes to the leisure and watersports centre of La Frette, set by a 32-hectare lake edged by white sands.
