  • Excellent base for the Bay of Somme
  • Close to the sandy beaches of Fort-Mahon and Quend-Plage
  • Easy access to the Parc du Marquenterre path; hire bikes on site
Ever been to the Bay of Somme? Settle down in a peaceful hamlet 10 minutes from its fine sands at Camping Le Clos des Genêts, in green scenic setting between Quend-Plage-les-Pins and Fort-Mahon-Plage. You can easily get on your bike around here, as the Clos des Genêts setting is close to several pedalling paths including one to the dunes, marshland, forest and birdwatching of Parc du Marquenterre, a tiptop Somme spot (like most of the region) for spying feathered species. If you haven't brought your own bike, hire one on site; child seats and trailers are available if needed too. In the hamlet of Routhiauville, Le Clos des Genêts is run by Sabine and Olivier as a family-friendly site for peaceful holidays. They've added a (new in 2017) big bouncy castle for kids to bound around at, a roomy area for pétanque, and a games room with billiards, table football, table tennis and a pinball machine. Shows, entertainment, dances and a bar run in evenings in high season. A big supermarket is 200 metres from the site, at the roundabout on the road to Fort-Mahon. Round and about, it's a couple of kilometres from here to the Aquaclub waterpark or teeing off at the course of the Golf de Belle Dune.

Local attractions

A bike ride is recommended first up, either with gentle aimlessness to see where in these pretty parts you might end up, or along to the Parc du Marquenterre, the famed 200-hectare birdwatching and nature region in the Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve. Thousands of migrating birds have a pitstop here in winter; at any time of year, ride along to see teals, spoonbills, storks and avocets flitting around and above the water. Around the Bay of Somme, there are yet more birds as well as seals to see, boats to sail between the bay's villages, and guided tours where you can cross the bay at low tide. Have a ride too on one of the Somme's steam locomotives to the seaside resorts of Le Crotoy, Noyelles-sur-Mer, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Cayeux-sur-Mer, along 24 kilometres of peaceful tracks. If you're in this part of northern France for a World War I remembrance trip, the Remembrance Trail runs through the nearby Somme Battlefields area, between Albert and Péronne and past the Chapel of Rememberance and the Delville Wood South African National Memorial. Within 10 minutes' drive are the sandy beaches of Quend-Plage and Fort-Mahon, for sand and water sports like sand yachting and catamaran sailing, or sunbathing on Quend-Plage's 15-kilometre stretch.
