  • Eco-friendly campsite near the popular Baleines Lighthouse
  • On an island nature haven
  • 18-hole mini golf course, playground and kids' activities
L'excellente Île de Ré... famed for its nature, its wild rocky coast, its protected environment and its many miles of walking and cycling paths – so many and so well preserved that many residents here say Pah to le car. And it's also famed for its beaches, so how fortuitously placed is Camping Les Baleines, with direct access to an Île de Ré sandy beach: le hurrah! The site is named for the Baleines Lighthouse a short walk away, another fairly famed spot on the isle and a lookout point dating back to 1854. It (site, not lighthouse) is a handy base for a family hol or a peaceful escape for couples, to take in the cycling trails and the small beaches like La Conche – would it surprise you to hear that this one is famed for its shell collecting...? On-site facilities include a volleyball court and two pétanque courts, an 18-hole mini golf course, a playground, a ping pong table, and board games available to borrow in reception. Regular activities for ages three to 11 are organised in high season. The site operates in an eco-friendly way and encourages recycling, energy and water savings; the owners are also pleased to offer local and regional produce in the small shop. Many summer markets as well as farmers' markets are available in the surrounding areas to pick up more supplies.

Local attractions

This beautiful little island provides quite a lot of roaming opportunities, whether you want to do it by foot or by pedal. Or by hoof: pony rides are available near the lighthouse as well as horse riding on the beach, a detail that makes us want to canter to Camping Les Baleines as soon as poss. On the coast and beaches, find shells and sunbathe, paddle or swim, or get more energetic with watersports like kitesurfing and sailing. If you're still feeling sporty, tennis is available in St Clément 200 metres away and a golf course is at Trousse-Chemise. Off the island, have a day in La Rochelle for its many art galleries, museums and its aquarium.
