  • Friendly and relaxed site in the forest of Aulnay
  • An hour from biking, boating and walks in Marais-Poitevin natural park
  • Bar, volleyball, pétanque and summer pool with waterslide
Sleeping in the middle of the woods is a very special experience and Camping Le Lizot offers just that. The Forest of Aulnay is a fab spot for stretching the legs and in the Charente-Maritime department of south west France you’re sure to soak up some sun while taking your dog for walkies. The region is famed for producing Cognac and the regional apéritif, Pineau – a combination making for merry ambles of the nearby church-dotted towns. A 10 minute-drive away, the oriental designs of the medieval Church of Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay are worth a gander, the wildlife-filled Regional Natural Park of the Marais Poitevin is less than an hour’s drive and there are beaches aplenty all along the south west coast. After adventure-packed days out, you can splash about back at base in the swimming pool complete with waterslide, or drum up some sibling rivalry with ping pong or pétanque. If you’ve a taste for two-wheeled action, rent a bike on site and zip around the forest or let your kids burn off some energy in the play area. In need of grub? Luckily there’s an on-site bar and restaurant, plus homemade cheeses, seafood and local fortified wines are never far away: just over an hour's drive and you're in La Rochelle, with enough gourmet shops to keep all gastronomes grinning broadly.

Local attractions

Want biking and beaches? Camping Le Lizot ticks both boxes, with the coast just over an hour’s drive away. Cop a load of La Rochelle (an hour and 15 minutes), a seaport city with snap-worthy arcaded walkways and lighthouses – its old port, medieval towers and daily markets may have you hanging up your towel for the day. Or take the causeway from La Rochelle and onto the famed Île de Ré (an hour and a half) for a day experiencing its white sand beaches, watersports, nature-filled dune-scapes and pretty villages. Zoodyssee, 25 minutes away, has over 70 species of animal, including lynx, bison and wolves to meet up with, and the nearby forest of Chizé, filled with over 530 species of butterfly, makes for multi-coloured wildlife wanderings. Futuroscope, an hour and a half away near Poitiers, is a theme park like no other, based upon multimedia, cinematographic futuroscope and audio-visual techniques. There's plenty here to fill your day, from 4D fairytale adventures to time machines. For more down-to-earth travels, Charente-Maritime department has hundreds of miles of cycle paths, signposted circuits and cycle priority routes. Make for Arcais or Damvix, an hour away, in the Marais-Poitevin Regional Natural park to bike or even boat your way through the so-called 'Green Venice' of wetland canals, where farmers still sometimes row their cows to market.
