Peaceful 45-hectare woodland site two kilometres from Brossac village

There's a lovely lake at Camping Étang Vallier, two kilometres from Brossac in the south of the Charente department – and a splendid setting too, as the site is lushly laid out among a forest of oak, pine and chestnut trees. This 45-hectare holiday village has its own four-hectare lake, where you can rent boats and try your hand at fishing, waterskiing and wakeboarding, or just lounge around and sunbathe on the sandy and roomy beach. Prefer to pedal? The site has bike hire and easy access to mountain bike circuits, a greenway and local looped trails: pick from nine loops of varying lengths and difficulties on the three circuits that lie nearby. There’s plenty more here too, including a summer miniature golf course, and beach activities arranged by the team in the summer season. Eats are sorted at the snack bar and restaurant, which has a huge terrace overlooking the lake. The village a 20-minute walk away has two restaurants, bakeries, a butcher's, a mini market and a petrol station.

Local attractions

There are 14 hiking trails in the countryside around Étang Vallier, along with three cycling circuits of varying lengths and difficulties. Several vineyards are also within easy reach of the site, including one less than five kilometres away that’s been family-run for five generations and gives visitors tours on a little train. If you’re in the market for foodie souvenirs, the vineyard shop sells cognac, wine, walnuts and walnut oil, as well as the region’s aperitif Pineau des Charentes. Also around five kilometres from base is the Guizengeard clay quarry, where there’s a nature trail through to an artificial lake created to fill the holes left by the quarryworks’ excavation of kaolin, a white-coloured clay that gives the water a spectacular turquoise tint: the team at Étang Vallier says this is an absolute must-see. For road trips, Brossac lies rather conveniently between the Dordogne, Charente-Maritime and Aquitaine regions, and the splendid seaside spot of Royan and other major cultural destinations of Bordeaux, Cognac, Saint-Émilion and Angoulême are all within 90 minutes’ drive.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Lots of space, camping amongst the trees. Quiet and very peaceful. Friendly staff. Facilities were a little tired, but perfectly functional.
