  • Well-equipped family-friendly site 150 metres from a river beach
  • Angoulême 45 minutes' drive; Limoges an hour
  • On-site restaurant, heated pool, paddling pool and tennis courts
On the edge of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park and within easy driving distance of top towns like Limoges and Angoulême, Camping les Gorges du Chambon is in a great location for a holiday with lots of varied activities for your days out. This family-friendly Charente site is about 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Eymouthiers and well placed for exploring Limousin and Périgord Vert as well as well as the surrounding area. There are lots of little villages nearby for markets and restaurants, and the area has plenty of hikes and other activities including hang-gliding, vélorail cycle rides and lakes for swimming in. The location has more going for it than just its proximity to days out though: this site is in a fine position next to the Tardoire river, with a small river beach 150 metres away along a footpath and a stretch of bank that’s suitable for fishing (if you have the correct licence). Facilities on site are top-notch too, including the heated outdoor pool and paddling pool, which have waterslides to keep active types busy and sun loungers and umbrellas for those who’d rather put their feet up. Elsewhere around the site, entertainment options include tennis, pétanque, mini golf, badminton, beach volleyball, a trampoline and a bouncy castle. Extra activities (like sports tournaments, outdoor movies and karaoke nights) run in July and August as well. A bar and restaurant on site should keep everyone fed and watered, and there are other handy facilities on hand as well, including a launderette and two bathroom blocks with hot showers and a baby bathroom.

Local attractions

Staying active on your holiday will be easy around here: you can hire bikes on site, head out for walks in the natural park or try riding on old railway lines at Vélorail de Charente-Limousine (35 minutes’ drive). Water lovers can swim from the beach at Étang de Saint-Estèphe (15 minutes) or try sailing at Lac de Lavaud (half an hour), while those who’d like a view from above tackle the treetop courses at Aventure Parc Lacs de Haute Charente (20 minutes). For a history-themed day out, pay a visit to Château La Rochefoucauld (20 minutes), an 11th-century castle with classic turrets and a Gothic chapel. Brantôme (45 minutes) should also be on the must-visit list for its riverside Benedictine Abbey and its collection of medieval and Renaissance buildings. There are more old buildings and museums to explore in Angoulême (45 minutes) and Limoges (an hour), where it’s particularly worth visiting the Fine Arts Museum to see displays of the town’s famed porcelain.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (XXL)

Liked: Area of site was very picturesque countryside. Children enjoyed the pool.

Disliked: Pitches not as described. Crammed in on to of each other, booked XXL pitch which should be 180sqM plus, was offered 1 smaller pitch or two others which weren't mapped. No pitches in the site are fully serviced, only water supply is random taps around the site. No grey water drains at the pitches simply a cramped grassy pitch with power. Very disappointing and certainly not what was advertised on pitchup. Got told we had to depart at 1100 when booking details state 1200. Restaurant on site missed food off orders, lack of supplies so half the menu was unavailable. Swimming pool had no where near enough sunbeds / seating for the size of pool or site. Toilet blocks were tired, small and not very clean.
