General
- Lakeside site near historic Moncontour
- 45 minutes' drive to Futuroscope and 90 minutes' drive to Puy du Fou
- Next to a 10-hectare lake with a watersports centre and miniature golf
Lake-based activities, scenic walks and very handsome environs are on the menu here at Camping de Moncontour Active Park. And off-site there's an amusement park right across the lakeshore, the dungeons of nearby Moncontour town, plus the two tremendously popular theme parks of Futuroscope and Puy du Fou both within 90 minutes' drive: très bien.
Camping de Moncontour is handily placed next to 10-hectare Lac du Magne, where there's a big leisure and watersports centre for getting out waterskiing and wakeboarding. Also at the centre there's a miniature golf course, and you can go swimming and fishing in the lake too (nominal per-session fees apply to all activities at the centre during July and August). However, if you're not feeling particularly sportif, then hang out at the water's edge and take in the spectacular scenery all around.
For times when you're not out on the water, you'll probably want to fuel up to get right back in; the site's restaurant has a splendid terrace overlooking the lake and serves everything from salads and pizzas to traditional French cuisine. During high season, the restaurant transforms into an events space for entertainment nights – so if you're not too achey from your long days of rigorous outdoorsy activities out on the lake, then you can throw a few shapes on the dance floor to the live bands performing of an evening.

Local attractions
Atop a hill looking over two spectacular valleys, the handsome and historic town of Moncontour is famed for its smashingly decorative church, its dungeon, its regular medieval street festival and the 42-kilometre nature trail that runs around it.
The area around Moncontour is a medieval metropolis too, as the medieval town of Thuars, Chinon and Saumur all lie within 30 kilometres, as does the medieval city of Poitiers. And they're all made even more attractive by the vineyards that surround them... wine tasting trip, anyone?
Based on multimedia, cinematographic and audiovisual techniques, Futuroscope is one of France's biggest and most popular theme parks and is around 45 minutes away by car, while the history-themed amusements of Puy du Fou are about 90 minutes' drive from the site.
If you're more of an animal fan, Vallée des Singes monkey reserve, L'Île aux Serpents snake reserve and La Planète crocodile reserve are all within around 90 minutes' drive.
