  • Family-run site at a 17th-century mill near Privas in the Ardèche
  • A 15-minute drive to Ardèche Natural Park, and 40 minutes to Viviers
  • Outdoor pool, trampoline, pétanque court, games room and restaurant
If you’d like to combine a bit of time travel with a relaxing family holiday in the Ardèche, you can do just that at Camping Le Moulin d’Onclaire, set around a historic flour mill dating from the 17th century. And if you fancy heading even further back across the centuries, simply have a wander around the cobbled medieval streets of the neighbouring village, Coux. The area may be packed with history but the facilities on site are thoroughly 21st-century – there’s a modern services block, washing machines (requiring paid tokens) and wifi is available everywhere. In high season all manner of entertainment takes place for the whole family, from karaoke sessions to concerts. And you can also challenge the owners to a game of pétanque, or keep the kids amused on the trampoline and playing ping pong, table football table or pool. If you need a sit down after all that activity, retire to the bar, set prettily by the swimming pool, for a stiff drink. You certainly shouldn't go hungry at Moulin d’Onclaire, as breakfast is available every day in the bar, and you can keep the kids going with a supply of daytime snacks and ice creams (just be aware the bar closes during siesta time). For a taste of traditional Ardèche cooking, the vaulted restaurant serves up local dishes in romantic surroundings. If you prefer to go self-catering, there’s a bakery and restaurant five minutes’ walk away. A supermarket for topping up on essentials is over in Privas (five minutes’ drive).

Liked: Good location. Well position power and water

Disliked: Publish check in times wrong (closed 12:30 - 15:00) so had to sit in a queue of caravans till reception opened. Showers were cold, we reported this to reception. We believe a plumber came in later that day as there was activity and noise in the service area. However there was no hot water for showers or washing up for the rest of our stay. No signs or information was posted or provided on the issue. We were glad to move on.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Arrived at site on a French Bank Holiday so nothing was open or happening. All of the facilities are in one central building, which does make it easier to explain to teenagers. These were clean and had everything we needed. The swimming pool was cold but so needed as the temperature was 32 degrees. Pitches are in woodland, are not marked but you still get privacy, and our neighbours were lovely. Free Wi-Fi is by the bar / pool area but if you are lucky you are close enough to access it all the time. Site has a river bed next to it but there is a sign saying no swimming well worth a walk down stream.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely, family run site and friendly owners. Small and cosy with lovely pitches next to the walled swimming pool or on the riverbed. Great little snack bar and delicious auberge restaurant right next door. Would certainly recommend to other travellers.

Disliked: Shower and toilet block was a mixed facility, which isn’t my preference but not a big issue.

Local attractions

Active types, rejoice – for you can access the Ouvèze River on foot from the site, for canoeing and fishing or a spot of wild swimming from the pebble beach. Start an exploration of the lush Ardèche on any number of hiking and cycling trails in the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche (15 minutes’ drive), as well as climbing and horse riding within half an hour’s drive. Feeling less energetic? Dominated by the Renaissance-era tower of Tour Diane de Poitiers, medieval Privas (five minutes’ drive) begs to be explored. Wander the hilly streets, head up to the viewpoint at the top of Rue de Montoulon to see the town’s red roofs and then put your feet up in a terrace bar to enjoy a leisurely café or beer. More picture-perfect villages to potter around include Viviers (40 minutes), with its cathedral showing off a multitude of architectural styles, and Joyeuse (50 minutes), with a 16th-century chateau and cobbled streets that play host to a sprawling produce market every Wednesday.
