Dips, dips et yet more dips… c'est delectable. Camping Le Chassezac, near Sampzon in the Ardèche, not only has direct access the Chassezac river for watery frolics, but has a heated pool on site for more of the same… or you could of course take it easier with river fishing or by-pool basking… The site is between the villages of Vallon Pont d'Arc and Ruoms and covers 4.3 hectares. It has a bar and restaurant open in peak summer season, along with a grocery shop, bread delivery service and an activities programme for guests. A play area, games room and pétanque court are also on site. Amenities at Le Chassezac include a launderette and a toilet block that's heated during the cooler months.

Local attractions

You won't have far to go from to find several traditional Ardèche markets: at Ruoms three kilometres away, Vallon Pont d'Arc on Thursday (five kilometres), the seasonal market at Rosieres (10 kilometres), Joyeuse (also 10 kilometres), Barjac (12 kilometres), Largentiere (14 kilometres) and Naves (16 kilometres) – and you might want to stop there before you run out of euros. Next up should be some of the many scenic villages in the area, like Balazuc and fashionable Vogue within 11 and 16 kilometres respectively, La Roque-sur-Ceze (29 kilometres) and La Garde-Guerin (36 kilometres). And then the essentials for visitors to the region, like the Réserve naturelle nationale des Gorges de l'Ardèche 13 kilometres away, and the natural rock formations of the Pont d'Arc... Greenery fans have acres' worth of gardens to pick from within an hour's drive, such as Jardin du mas de l'Abri (29 kilometres); Jardin du Tomple (32 v); Jardin des Herbes (33 v) and Bambouseraie de Prafrance (47 kilometres), or you could take it easy with simple strolls or cycles in the green countryside around the site...? Also recommended are trips to the animal park La Ferme aux crocodiles (30 kilometres), the caves of the Grotte de Saint-Marcel (19 kilometres) and the Grotte de la Cocaliere (20 kilometres), and a day/evening trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Roman Theatre and its Surroundings and the Triumphal Arch of Orange (now there's a mouthful), just under 50 kilometres away.
