General
- Green setting in Drôme, a 10-minute walk from Hauterives
- Friendly park a few hundred metres from a river and beach
- Pool, playground, TV room and summer activities for all ages
This is a stellar spot for Rhône-Alpes activities and attractions… Camping Le Château is in a green setting in the Drôme, a few hundred metres from fishing, tennis and a small river with beach – and between two regional natural parks for weeks’ worth of outdoor adventuring.
The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Hauterives (home to the famed Ideal Palace – go see), and around an hour’s drive from both Lyon and Grenoble. It’s in green setting (go see pics) and flat ground, with excellent modern facilities including a summer pool, a playground and a pétanque court; marked trails for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking are a couple of hundred metres away for those erring towards more energetic pursuits.
Owners Fabienne and Gaëtan are always on hand for help and advice if needed, and organise a packed programme of activities and entertainment in summer: bingo, karaoke nights and disco events are all on the menu and there’s a kids’ club too.
The site also has a restaurant – like the TV room, reception and amenities, it has full disabled access.

Local attractions
Cycling and hiking trails, a river and a beach are two hundred metres’ stroll from the site, fishing is three hundred metres away and tennis within half a kilometre. Horse riding is available three kilometres away.
Local town Hauterives is within walking distance: head here for the Tuesday market, shops and a supermarket, and to see the splendid Ideal Palace built by postman Ferdinand Cheval over 33 years from the 19th to 20th century. From there, find your way to the Hauterives maze, where four labyrinths made up of over 6,000 trees and seven kilometres of plants await to get lost in.
Another nicely odd option is Les Chèvres Qui Dansent (five minutes’ drive), a goat farm where visitors can join in with milking and see how the cheese is made (yes, you can taste and buy the cheese too). Or hotfoot it to the International Shoe Museum at Romans-sur-Isère (30 minutes), for a look at footwear through the ages – even the kids might like this one...
Further afield, have outdoor days aplenty in the Pilat Natural Regional Park, accessible 50 minutes’ drive to the west, and the Vercors Regional Natural Park, 40 minutes’ east. For city days, Grenoble is an hour to the east and Lyon an hour and 10 minutes to the north.
