Spectacular views of the Rhône valley are just one of the many topping features of this friendly, family-run and excellently maintained south of France site in the Drôme Provençale region... and an infinity pool, proximity to walking and cycling trails, and lots of stuff on site and around the locale should keep kids amply amused too. Surrounded by hills, meadows and trees, Camping Les Bastets is five kilometres from the Drôme river, and Montélimar is an easy 20-minute drive away. Further activities nearby include horse riding, summer dog sledding, golf and canoeing, and an aerial adventure park is two kilometres away for swings and clambers among treetop canopies. As well as that fab pool, leisure facilities include a playground, trampoline and bouncy castle, a pétanque court, a ping pong table and a games room, and free wifi on the bar terrace. A kids’ club on weekday mornings and family activities such as pétanque tournaments and music evenings run during the summer months too. Eating options are also well covered, at the restaurant serving up tasty local dishes throughout the season either inside or on its terrace, and a pizzeria open in high season. For self-catered stays, pick up your vittles from the grocery store – where you can also order freshly bread and viennoiseries to set you up for the day ahead – and avail of the barbecue area for alfresco eats while (smugly) surveying your spectacular surrounds.

Local attractions

Highly scenic hiking and cycling trails of all sorts network crisscross Marsanne and the surrounding Drôme Provençale region, and with a riding stables 10 kilometres away, exploring the area on horseback is easy here too. Elsewhere, you can take to the waters of the Drôme in a canoe, five kilometres away, while a golf course can be found in Montboucher-sur-Jabron, less than 20 minutes’ pootle away. Kid-friendly attractions include La Fôret de Robin aerial adventure park, two kilometres away, Crocodile Farm in Pierrelatte, and the Train de l'Ardèche, both within an hour’s drive. Kids (and grownups) who like tiny things might also rather like a little trip to spy wee figurines among teeny town scenes at Miniature Provençal Village in Grignan, 40 minutes from base. Several sugary attractions are within easy reach, including the Palace of Sweets, 10 kilometres away at Montélimar, and Cité du Chocolat Valrhona within 50 minutes’ drive in Tain l'Hermitage. While you’re there, be sure to squeeze in a segway tour of the town’s tremendous vineyards – followed by, of course, an après-tour tipple.
