One doesn't get many lakes like this to the euro... but then this is Lake Annecy, in a green countryside setting and surrounded by the Alps: c'est most pretty indeed. Family-friendly Camping La Ravoire is less than a kilometre from the shores of this lush lake and about 17 kilometres from the town of Annecy. Bring your togs for site pursuits as well as lakey ones, for here there be a pool, a paddling pool and waterslide in the centre of the site along the many other facilities for folks who are ready to get active... (Non to the activeness? Relaxing deckchairs aplenty are by the pool). La Ravoire extends over two and a third hectares and is made up of level pitches and tree-lined alleys. It's only some metres from the lake (although the nearest access point is via the beach at Doussard, less than a kilometre away). Around the back runs the cycle path from Annecy to Albertville, a safe place for all to cycle or to try some inline skating. The swimming pool complex is in the centre of the site, near the bar and terrace. There's also a big playground with slide, roundabout, table tennis and other games for tiddlers, and a multisports area and a pétanque court next to the playground. A games room is on the first floor of the reception building, with a billiard table, mini football table and video games; the first floor is also the place to go if you want any tourist info on the region or to find out about the many sports available all around. Or ask the Camping La Ravoire staff: the small team here prides itself on its high-quality service and its members are all on hand to help you have a highly enjoyable stay.

Route directions

From Annecy: Follow directions to Albertville on the D1508 and go through the towns of Sevrier, St Jorioz, Duingt, Bredannaz (approximately 18km). At the entrance of Bout du Lac you will see a restaurant with a large red sign on your left (lake side) called 'Chez Ma Cousine'. Directly opposite to the restaurant make a right turn (opposite the restaurant car park). Follow this road for about 50m, cross the cycle path and then turn right onto Route de la Ravoire; the campsite is 200m down the road on the right-hand side. From Albertville: Follow directions to Annecy, taking the D1212 north then the D1508, and go through Ugine and Favreges – take the dual carriage towards Doussard. Continue to Bout du Lac up to the restaurant called 'Chez Ma Cousine' on the right-hand (lake side). Turn left onto the road opposite the car park and follow for about 50m, then cross the cycle path and turn right onto Route de la Ravoire; the campsite 200m down the road on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Many a place is named these days as 'The Venice of...' something or other, but it shouldn't make your pedantic muscles twitch to hear that local city Annecy is nicknamed the 'Venice of the Alps', for verily it is Very Pretty (and watery) Indeed. Stroll around the city's also very pretty lanes and then get hither to the Forclaz Pass for one of the best views of the/a lake you'll get anywhere; it's about 25 minutes' drive from Camping La Ravoire. You'll also be up for a cruise on the lake, of course... Embark on a boat ride from Bout du Lac 200 metres from the site for getting to a day at Annecy, or just floating around close to base, drifting dreamily among the views of the surrounding mountains... Chamonix and Mont Blanc are an hour's drive away:its fairly safe to say that climbing up to an altitude of 3,777 metres at l'Aiguille du Midi and touching snow in summer is a hol experience that will be with you always.
