You may be away from the sea at Camping du Léman Saint Disdille in the Haute-Savoie department of the Rhône-Alpes, but as you might surmise from its name and its setting close to the town of Thonon-les-Bains, dips into water are a cinch to sort from here. And how – for Thonon is one of the lakeside towns of smashing Lac Léman or Lake Geneva, the vast and beaut body of water between France and Switzerland making up one of the biggest lakes in Europe. And if you also require a beach? Step this way too. The Léman waters around the site can reach 24 or 25 degrees Celsius in summer, so if you reckon that means swimming, watersports or just floating gently on one's back gazing up at the blue sky as clouds drift past… how right you'd be. The Léman Saint Disdille team is always around to help guests of all ages get out and into the water: even tentatively-minded kids should be clamouring to give it all a go once they see site mascot Samy perched atop his paddleboard. Everything at this big, welcoming and family-friendly site has been thoughtfully added or arranged so you can make the most of your holiday, whether you're up for getting active or lazing around under the sun. The team also run partnerships with local businesses to offer fishing, paddleboarding, rafting, canoeing and other activities with ease, and several hiking trails start from around the site, into the lush landscape and clear air of this setting 380 metres above sea level. A heap of site-based sporty options are around for active types, such as handball, football, and basketball on the multisport courts; playing tennis, beach volleyball, pétanque and table tennis, or working out on the outdoor fitness equipment. Archery is around too if you'd like to give it a shot… perhaps while the kids are safely out of the way at the July and August club for ages four to 10…? Into the evening, sizzle up supper on the communal barbecues using fresh foodstuffs from the small supermarket or the shops in Thonon-les-Bains (market days are on Monday and Thursday mornings). Or have eats on site from the restaurant or snack bar, before sorting a sup from the bar and settling down for one of the family theme nights, run regularly in high season. When you're ready to get out and about, flick through the welcome guide you'll be given on arrival, which lists the many things to partake of in the region, as well as the fave picks of former guests.

Local attractions

The site is 380 metres above sea level, by the lakeside town of Thonon-les-Bains and the Dranse delta nature reserve. There's no faff in finding loads of stuff to do: as well as the watersports and activities on site, walking trails of all levels start nearby and bike hire is available for peaceful rides around the lake. Book a guided walk at the Dranse delta nature reserve, the smallest reserve in the Haute-Savoie region, to see wetland birds such as plovers and mammals including beavers. Tours are run on Wednesday mornings from July until the end of August, and are free (note, s'il vous plait, that they're in French only). At comely Thonon-les-Bains, make the tourist office in the 12th-century Château de Sonnaz your first stop, for info about the town alongside spectacular views of Lake Geneva, Rives port and the Château de Monjoux below. Then take the funicular (or hike) down to the lake to visit the fishing museum, or stay high up in town to visit the Chablais museum, also in the Château de Sonnaz; how handy. Geneva and Montreux are both 40 minutes' drive away. Annecy and the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc, can be reached in under an hour.
