Meet here for sparkling stays: Camping à la Rencontre du Soleil, near the Isère department's Le Bourg-d'Oisans, is in a land laden with outdoor activities: its setting in the French Alps is in the Romanche river valley, surrounded by mountain resorts like Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes, and close to the hiking and climbing of Écrins National Park. If you want to tackle the region on two wheels, you may like to know that the Alpe d'Huez is often on the route of the Tour de France; nearby mountain pass Col de la Croix de Fer has been on the tour umpteen times too. And if it's shops and cities you prefer to get active among, Le Bourg-d'Oisans is between Grenoble and Briançon, and about 40 kilometres from Poligny. Scenic stays are sorted here too, as Rencontre du Soleil's hectare and a half is among mature woodland with over 180 species of flowers, trees and shrubs and a spectacular mountain backdrop. Its modern facilities include a heated pool, surrounded by greenery for both shade and sun, and with plenty of sunbeds and sun loungers on which to bask. The site also has a sports area, a playground and a restaurant serving French classics and modern options. Regular activities are organised by the staff in high season.

Local attractions

Peaceful mountain stays and active adrenalised days are both easily had from here, from gentle lake strolls to hiking to hang gliding. Local town Le Bourg d'Oisans is a good starting point whichever option you pick, as it has easy access south east to Écrins National Park and its many activities such as rafting, whitewater rafting, canyoning, horse riding, summer skiing, paragliding, hang gliding and cycling. If you want to tackle part of the Tour de France route, hire a bike in Le Bourg d'Oisans and cycle up to the tourist office, to proudly bag a certificate of official completion available for a small charge. More gentle cycles as well as walks and hikes are also available nearby at Saint Christophe, Les Perrons, l'Alpe d'Huez and Les Freaux. Grenoble, about 28 kilometres from base, is another popular stop in the region, for sights such as the mountains spread out below from one of its famed cable cars, and attractions including the Museum of Grenoble and the works of Stendhal at the town museum. If you're driving around the region, Grenoble is also the end of the Route Napoléon, following Bonaparte's 350-kilometre journey to here from Cannes.

Disliked: Showers need updateing but we’re all very clean,pitch was kept well and pool was lovely, really need to stock up on mosquito repellent as we were bitten like crazy,but that’s only for to the location.

Liked: Location and amenities were very good, clean and well set our site. The staff were very caring and helpful when we found ourselves in a situation whereby we did not have all our camping equipment. They provided us with essentials to make our stay possible and we’re flexible with our departure date. They could not have been more helpful.

Disliked: Nothing, would highly recommend.

Liked: All of it. A very well maintained site in a stunning location. Real pride taken in it by the owners. Great little town within walking distance. The pool was delicious!

Disliked: We were a few days early for the on site restaurant which would have been great but we knew it wouldn’t be open and it wasn’t a problem for us.
