  • Among spectacular scenery in the Belledonne mountain range
  • A 30-minute drive to Grenoble
  • Homemade pizzas, shop, games room and summer activities for kids
Whether you’re a hiker and biker or a ski-slope slalomer, there’s something for you during your stay at Camping du Buisson, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Saint-Martin-d’Uriage in the Isère department of the Rhône-Alpes region – it all depends on when you choose to visit. High in the Belledonne mountain range, Camping du Buisson is a prime jumping off point for every season’s activities. During the winter you can hit the slopes at Chamrousse, 25 minutes away, then when the thaw sets in you can wander the same slopes in a much less downhill-at-speed kind of way (unless you fancy bringing the bike, obvs): follow the via ferrata climbing route, explore the mountain trails that bring you to lakes and waterfalls, or give your legs a rest with a spot of pony trekking. Back on-site, keep busy in the games room or with a few games of pétanque, or just revel in the spectacular views of the Belledonne. If that’s not keeping the kids entertained, there are tons of activities organised for them during the high seasons… Once you’ve worked up an appetite on the slopes (snowy or not), head to the snack bar for some woodfired pizza or pick up some essentials from the small shop to pile on the barbecue. Fancy a break from cooking? No problem – you can try one of the many restaurants within 20 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

Camping du Buisson is a good base for exploring this part of Rhône-Alpes, starting with the city of Grenoble, less than 30 minutes’ drive away: wander the many historical sites, come face-to-face with exotic creatures at the natural history museum, visit the covered markets, or simply take in the beautiful architecture. If Grenoble is just your starting point, you can also join the Napoleon Route here and follow it all the way to Cannes 325 kilometres away. Making your way to the hamlet of Montfort is a must: here you can climb aboard the Saint-Hilaire du Touvet Funicular and make the journey up the steepest funicular ascent in Europe. As you approach the village of Saint-Hilaire, remember that this was once the only way to get there, other than walking or by donkey. Time your trip well and you can stick around at the top for Coupe Icare, a festival dedicated to all kinds of free-flying, from hang gliders and paragliders to hot air balloons. For a few days out in nature, try Laffrey lakes for swimming and watersports or Écrins National Park for Alpe d’Huez and the Chalet Morville tree-top courses, or just forget about nature altogether for a trip to the absolutely stunning Château de Vizille or for unwinding at the Uriage-les-Bains thermal baths.
