  • Quiet and scenic site halfway between Dijon and Lyon
  • Well placed for visiting the Burgundy and Beaujolais wine areas
  • Pool, pétanque, play area, library and flower-filled gardens
If you’re one of those old romantics with a soft spot for days filled with flowers and wine, you’ll fit right in at Camping Les Ripettes, a peaceful little spot just outside Pont de Vaux in the Rhône-Alpes. Flowers are courtesy of owner Isabelle, who dedicates many of her days to planting all sorts of flora at her park to ensure the place is constantly bursting with blooms. And the wine – well, the wine comes from the many vineyards dotted all around this verdant part of the world, with several within an hour's drive. Midway between Dijon and Lyon, Les Ripettes is handily placed not only for visiting wineries but also for birdwatching, pottering around in the surrounding wetlands and canoeing on the Saône river. But it’s not just the location that makes this such a fab choice – it’s also a mighty friendly and relaxed place with games of volleyball, badminton, table tennis and pétanque to fill your time, along with a pool for cooling dips and a play area for the amusement of les enfants. Secretly hoping for a prolonged period of doing nothing? This is the place to embrace it – take a wander through the gardens and select a spot in which to settle. Should you run out of reading matter, there’s a little library to peruse and free wifi to keep your gadget updated. In high season you can buy wine, cold drinks and ice creams on site and order morning bread and pastries to be delivered. Over the summer a snack bar opens three times a week and there’s a pizza takeaway service once a week.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site, extremely well run by very friendly owners. Spotless toilet block and the biggest pitches I have ever seen! Nice pool although it's small so a few teenagers fills it up! Set in the countryside with some nice well signposted walks. Definitely recommend for 2 or 3 nights

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Het zwembad was fijn!

Local attractions

Wine-based days are within day-trip distance: take tours, taste the wares and pick up single bottles or several cases – all up to you. The Burgundy region is an hour’s drive away, and the vineyards and wineries around Mâcon about 20 minutes or so. From Mâcon, follow the wine trail down the banks of the Saône river as far as Beaujolais, calling into numerous vineyards that overlook the river as you go. (Should you prefer to head straight to Beaujolais, it’s about a 50-minute drive). A spot of gentle exercise is almost certainly a good idea too when your hols are likely to involve much guzzling: walks close to the site take in the wetlands that are a real birdwatching haven, and villages full of timbered farmhouses with decorative Saracen chimneys to keep an eye out for. Horse and pony riding trips run from an equestrian centre five minutes’ drive away, or head to Mâcon for a pleasant paddle on the waters of the Saône in a canoe or kayak.
