Settle relaxedly down here for a French hol for spectacular views of the nearby mountains, in beaut locale amid a pine forest, and with many ski resorts of the Alps available within easy distance via free shuttle buses to the snowy slopes. Not up for skiing or snowy weather stays? The mountainous Savoie setting around family-friendly Camping La Forêt is just the ticket too for sunny day pastimes like hiking, cycling or upping adrenaline with a spot of whitewater sports. Les Arcs and Tignes are about five and 16 respective kilometres from base. Staying on site, La Forêt has a heated pool open from mid-June to mid-September, a playground and a pétanque court, table tennis and local specialties to try at the site restaurant. Fresh bread and pastries are available to buy if you let the team know your order in advance. The toilet blocks and hot showers are solar powered; there's also a launderette, and if you do come for the slopes, you can store your skis safely on site when they're not in use.

Local attractions

Several sites of spectacular scenery are within easy reach of Camping La Forêt: add to your day trip destination list Mont Blanc (25 kilometres), one of the highest mountain passes in Europe in the Col de l'Iseran (26 kilometres), the Bossons Glacier (30 kilometres), the Aiguille du Midi (via cable car, 36 kilometres), the lakes of Cornu and Anterne (38 and 42 kilometres), and the mountain pass of the Col de la Colombière (51 kilometres). Another couple of day trips should be to the ski resort of Tignes within 16 kilometres, which makes up several Alpine ski villages among another setting of spectacular mountain scenery. Hang-gliding, climbing, ice-skating and – ulp – under-ice diving are also available in the resort, along with plenty of bars and restaurants for days off piste. Other highly scenic options are Val d'Isere (21 kilometres) and the wooden-balconied houses and 16th-century church of Bonneval, reachable within around 31 kilometres.
