  • Lush site in the grounds of a hotel for guests over 14
  • Surrounded by hiking/biking trails; within easy reach of two rivers
  • Greek restaurant, gym, bike hire and Boeing 737 flight simulator
What a pretty spot. And what a spectacularly nifty setting: within easy reach of a motorway, and handily placed for stopovers between Belgium, the Netherlands and the rest of Central Europe. The Rhein-Hunsrück site Burgstadt Camping Park is also less than a kilometre’s walk from the handsome medieval centre of Kastellaun. And, even more handily, right next door is a hotel with a Greek restaurant and beer garden for feasts and tipples, plus – get this – a Boeing 737 flight simulator for non-flying types. There’s reams to explore in this region: for starters, the area’s dense network of hiking and cycling trails are a splendid way to get out and see the local countryside. If you’re after something a little more adventurous, an excursions operator in Kastellaun organises activities and days away around the region too. Burgstadt Camping Park is a peaceful nook in the grounds of the BurgStadt Hotel in Kastellaun for guests over the age of 14; friendly owner Heiko has set the site in a laidback landscaped park. To keep things nice and relaxed, there’s no entertainment here – just plenty of lush greenery to roam among (or a gym to take things up a notch), and bikes to hire should you fancy getting out to explore the many cycle paths that crisscross the locale. At the pitches, guests will find themselves with water taps, an electricity outlet and chemical disposal points; also at your disposal is a bathroom block with toilets and hot showers, as well as a laundry room. Also handily, free wifi is available.

Liked: Very well laid out with lovely facilities. By a lovely town and beer garden in the hotel was very nice. Lovely that it takes dogs.

Disliked: Little awkward to get the dog off site to go to the toilet as we always clean up after her but we managed it so fine.

Local attractions

As you’re a short walk from the medieval fortified city of Kastellaun, your first jaunt off site should be an amble around its plentiful winding alleys and stops among its little shops. Several good restaurants and inns are around too should you fancy tucking into regional tidbits or quaffing top-notch German brews. As you might expect around here, piles of hiking and cycling options are around, with countryside tramps along sections of the 410-kilometre Saar-Hunsrück-Steig hiking trail, or the BurgStadt-Pfad path both nearby. If you’d rather sightsee from the saddle, hire a bike on site and pedal from Kastellaun along the Schinderhannes route, or to the nearby Moselle and the Rhine riverbanks. Over in Bell, a short drive or pedal from base, there’s a big animal park that – alongside lots of lovely furry and feathery farmyard beasties – houses several Siberian tigers; take the kids to peek at feeding time and see other critters like ostriches, eagles and sheep. Also in the area is a high ropes course for lovers of adventures at lofty heights, and Germany’s longest suspension bridge over in Geierlay.
