  • Quiet site with a sea view two kilometres from Sorrento
  • Pompeii, Herculaneum, Positano and Naples within an hour's drive
  • Swimming pool, restaurant and clifftop serviced sunbathing area
A splendid sea-view site on the Campania coast, within strolling distance of the centre of Sorrento – sounds good, si? Set forth for family-run Villaggio Campeggio Santa Fortunata, in a quiet hillside spot a couple of kilometres from the famed resort’s beaches, shops and restaurants. If you think it sounds good already you may well surmise that it gets even better when you note such things as the fragrant olive, lemon and oak trees that fill the grounds, and nifty touches including an on-site restaurant (with both tasty food and sea views, of course) and a mini market for your snacks, drinks and other bits and bobs. Although the sea views may be fab, no doubt you’ll be wanting to get rather closer to the clear waters of the Amalfi coast – and you can with great ease from here, as there’s a small beach a very short walk away. If you like your swims and sunbathing to come with even less effort, settle at the open-air pool, which is surrounded by a sun terrace with parasols and loungers, or find more of the same at a chilled-out clifftop sunbathing area. Once you’ve sauntered around Sorrento, it’s worth noting that this site is handily placed for jaunts elsewhere along the Amalfi coast: day trips to Positano, Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Capri all await (assuming you can rouse yourself from the sun lounger and sea views…)

Electric grass and earth pitch (super)

Liked: Beautiful campsite, lovely restaurant, clean facilities, good for dogs, plenty of unused areas for walking them. Once you realise you need to use public transport everywhere, it is great

Disliked: Unable to use shuttle as they dont allow larger dogs. Bus stop for public bus was on the side of the main road with no footpath, so dangerous when waiting for bus with our dogs. Hard to drive anywhere as there was so much traffic! Noise from road at night. Tourist information could be improved, eg maps of local area, public transport times. We would not visit again with the dogs

Electric grass and earth pitch (super)

Liked: Location - close to Serrento Food at the restaurant was very good Pitch size was great Good public transport into town

Disliked: Pitch was dry & dusty which got carried into the van & got everywhere Steep inclines - not mentioned before booking ( campsite is built within the cliff face) Views - couldn’t se the view coz of the trees Beach - we went to go to the beach but the fate was locked when it was within the times it should have been open. Manager attitude -I used their washing machine, the machine took the money, ran through the cycle & didn’t wash the clothes. I informed reception who said they would send someone down, she had a look said she would come back with €5 to reimburse me, manager then came down said I wouldn’t be getting my €5 back as he didn’t see that it wasn’t working! I had put the clothes on a wash in another machine but he told me as he hadn’t seen it I would not get a refund ( I had shown the 1st person that came down)and walked away! Terrible customer service & he essentially called me a liar!!! Group parties - one of the nights there was a very large group of youth/school staying who had an organised party which was very loud till approx 11pm Ants - they obv have an issue that needs sorting, they were everywhere! Dogs - I’m very much a let lover but there was a dog howling all night long for 2 of the 3 nights that we were there! Not great value for money, we stayed at much better campsites in Italy which were half the price. All in all the bad outweighed the good quality’s and I will definitely not be staying at this campsite again.

Liked: We had a a great panoramic view of the coast/Sorrento (costs a little extra but well worth it. The swimming pool & beach/sea swimming area were fab. Loo/shower were plentiful & clean & even had loo paper & soap! We ate at the restaurant & the food was lovely, and the shop is small but well stocked. We used the shuttle into Sorrento which was v. handy & we booked an Amalphi coast boat trip where the campsite dropped us off & picked us up after. I found the staff friendly & helpful. We had a great 3 night stay & I would happily recommend this campsite.

Electric grass and earth pitch (super)

Liked: Clean Swimming pool.

Disliked: Possibly the worst holiday experience we have had in our life. The emphasis is entirely about complying with the many written and some unwritten rules which change according to the management and staff attitude on that day. No emphasis is given to ensuring that customers have a happy, stress free and comfortable stay, indeed, quite the reverse. This campsites ethos is all about enforcing rules and maximising profit whilst making your stay as miserable as possible. Where do I start. Firstly, I booked a pitch that included space for a camper van and awning with a sea view. On arrival the pitch was just big enough for a camper van only. We were then moved to another pitch that was ten minutes walk to the entrance – not a great start. The pitch was a patch of dust infested with ants. Advertised as grass and earth. We didn’t see any evidence of grass on this campsite. The campsite has signs posted everywhere which state ‘We want to respect nature and avoid intervening chemically to solve problems such as that of ants’. Fair enough, however, the signs further state that ‘We recommend you using anti ant powder’. Do they imagine that ant powder doesn’t contain chemicals? Quite conveniently they sell ant powder in vast quantities at the camp market. Hence, it appears to be OK to intervene chemically as long as they profit from it and the don’t have to accept responsibility for it. Another example (one of many) of profiteering and putting rules before customer service is when we had planned to take the campsite mini bus to the centre of Sorrento to go on a planned tour of Pompei and Vesuvious. Worth noting at this point that there are no pavements on the winding , narrow and busy road between the campsite and Sorrento for about half a mile and so walking is a dangerous occupation especially with children and reckless Italian driving. We carried out a dry run on the same bus the night before between Sorrento and the campsite to ensure there were no delays. We were not required the night before to wear any form of face mask. The next morning the same driver insisted we wore the PPF2 style masks and that our UK surgical masks were not adequate and hence were refused use of the camp bus. Co-incidentally they happen to sell the PPF2 masks at the site – another example of profiteering from our misery. We were forced to take a public bus and only arrived with 5 minutes to spare for the guided tour. As clients we expect our hosts wo make our holiday as stress free as possible – Is this too much to ask? There were also many examples of rules being applied according to nationality with the rules being lapsed for Italians. This discrimination is unacceptable and should be called out. For example our 12 years old son was told to stop playing with a ball in the pool and then later in the day the same unwritten rule was not applied to Italian children. We also had trouble sleeping due to the heat. Of course, the campsite cannot control the weather. However, the very loud ‘childrens’ entertainment started about 10pm and finished about 11.30pm. Not great if your planning getting up at 6.30am to go planned excursions. Also, Sorrento had fireworks on random nights which lasted until 12.30am in the morning on at least 2 of the 5 nights we stayed (also admittedly outside of the sites control but this provides context). We have never been more glad to travel to an air conditioned hotel to catch up on sleep. During our entire stay we felt unwelcomed and treated disrespectfully throughout. For instance, every morning when using the washing facilities the cleaners sneered at you and mopped around your feet. Altogether, we would say that this has been possibly the worst holiday experience we have ever had and if this review stops just one family staying at this site then I am glad. I would be very weary of the some of the very positive and gushing reviews which no doubt were provided by friends and family of the campsite

Local attractions

You’ll surely start in Sorrento, strolling through the lovely Old Town, sipping local limoncello in shaded piazzas and soaking up some of the old fishing-village vibe by dining at a seafood restaurant by the harbour. Sorrento’s also the spot to pick up a boat ride over to the island of Capri – once you’re there, flag down a smaller vessel to dart in and out of the coves and caves along the craggy shoreline, such as the shimmering Blue Grotto. You may also like to rub shoulders with other glam guests at one of the island’s swanky beach clubs – or you may prefer to take to one of the island’s hiking trails if you’d rather a bit more space to yourself. Where else? Well, if it’s these little seaside towns that are your style, plan an outing to Positano (35 minutes’ drive). For a big city vibe, nip up to Naples (an hour), perhaps venturing to the crater of Vesuvius enroute. For much-famed history, take a trip to the Pompeii Archaeological Park (45 minutes) and/or Herculaneum (an hour).
