  • Eco-friendly and foodie site 10 minutes' drive from Montese
  • Restaurant serving local food; jams, sauces and chutneys made on site
  • Pool, tennis, playground, trampoline and spotless amenities
If you’ve ever wondered what hidden Italy looks like – and equally importantly, how its cuisine tastes – the Campeggio Ecochiocciola team reckon this is the place for you. For starters, this handsome park is in the province of Modena between Bologna and Florence (you may have heard that both cities are rather well known for their food), in what the site staff proudly hail as the culinary heart of Italy. Culinary adventures are sorted with ease on site too: the restaurant dishes up a wide variety of local cuisine and regional specialities; makes its own jams, sauces and chutney, and ventures further afield with food offered from areas visited by chefs Ottavio, Gestore and Cuoco. And as well as all that… foodie trips to the likes of local parmesan cheese farms are regularly arranged... As you may have gathered from the ‘eco’ part of the name, Campeggio Ecochiocciola is firmly environmentally friendly too, a site where the team makes it their mission to be as eco conscious as possible. Green and eco materials are used throughout wherever possible, and the restaurant menu is packed with meals made using locally sourced and produced ingredients. For those times you’re not at the restaurant, the site has tennis and volleyball courts for the grownups, a summer pool, and a play area and trampoline for smaller foodies. And its ‘hidden’ aspect? Take a look at the pics to see Campeggio Ecochiocciola’s scenic and secluded setting… you might opt to remain – and feed – here for the whole of your hol.

Local attractions

Still got an appetite? Set out on a foodie tour of the area to sample the famed balsamic vinegar in Modena (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive), tour parmesan cheese factories and eat your way round Bologna (an hour and 20 minutes), where you can take cooking classes, take eating tours and learn more about the Italian foodie scene at Fico Eataly World, billed as the world’s biggest food park. Or perhaps it’s time to temper all that eating with a bit of activity… if that’s the case, make tracks for the mountain trails of Monte Belvedere (15 minutes) or the more manageable paths of the Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park (40 minutes), taking in caves, woodland and little villages as you wander. If you’d like to see some of the scenery from above, take to the treetop trails at Esploraria adventure park (half an hour). Prefer to keep feet on the ground? Wander around Montecuccolo Castle (40 minutes) or pick a little village for strolls and lunching – Montese, Castel d’Aiano and Zocca are all good options within a half-hour drive.
