  • On the Riviera Dei Fiori with spectacular Alps views
  • Outdoor pool, paddling pool, sun terrace, playground and pétanque
  • Restaurant overlooking the pools and serving traditional food
Settling down for a peaceful stay in Imperia's Nervia valley, among chestnuts, eucalyptus and mimosa trees, on a hillside site with spectacular views of the surrounding Alps… sound good? Bag a break at family-run Camping Delle Rose, just over the border from France in a quiet corner of Liguria. Run by Lorena, Mauro and their son Lorenzo, this park aims to give friendly welcomes to all, with attention and services carefully tailored to suit guests' individual needs. The family has added a summer pool and a paddling pool for dips on hot days, a sun terrace for basking at before and after, a playground for the kids, and a pétanque court popular for a spot of competition at the end of a sunny day. Overlooking the pools, the restaurant has regional food as its main focus, dishing up traditional dinners like pesto pasta, homegrown Taggiasche olives and rabbit ragu. Pizzas (always a topping option with the kids) are available from the woodfired oven. Delle Rose also has a bar serving cold drinks, cappuccinos and coffees, as well as a snacks such as sandwiches and quick bites.

Green electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location but steep access.

Disliked: The showers were small and difficult to access (door opens into shower cubicle and blocks the shower operation unless inside or with bare arm stretched through small gap. Not good until hot water flows) All of the urinals were taped up for non use.

Blue electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Yellow electric optional grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: The location was great, but it is quite remoted from restaurants, supermarkets etc.. The camping had a Nice view and the staff was very friendly.

Disliked: The showers weren’t practical. You don’t have a dry place to put your dry clothes and towel, so that’s really inconveniant. There aren’t enough parkingspots for the amount of people staying at the campside. We had to be creative and create our own spot.

Liked: The view

Disliked: My husband and I have been camping for almost 40 years. We have never written a bad review - but we have never had as terrible a time as our stay at Camping Delle Rose. We booked a pitch just over a day before we arrived with our children in our caravan and, as it is high season, we weren’t expecting too much. However, nothing could prepare us for what we were about to experience. The place we were allocated is not in fact a camping pitch - it is a tiny corner of a car park outside the camping area. There are two of these so-called “pitches”. Ours was covered in mounds of dried dog poo and rubbish, including food, when we arrived. It was also completely infested with insects - unsurprising, given the filthy conditions. To provide some context, we have camped in places as far and wide as Mongolia and Laos and are used to extremely basic conditions. However, this was completely different - it was disgusting. Apart from the hygiene problems, the space is so small it can barely fit a caravan inside it. On one side is a main road, and on the other side is the car park. The only entrance and exit to this is right next to the “pitch”, so cars were constantly reversing right up to our caravan for hours during the night, with their lights shining and their parking sensors beeping just two metres away from our heads. It was impossible for us, our two-year-old son and six-month-old daughter to sleep. We complained when we first arrived but were told no other pitch was available. We decided to leave early after just one night and complained again the next morning. The staff refused to offer us a refund. They explained that it is high season and we had made a late booking. They also said that it was the responsibility of Pitchup, the website we used to make the booking, to deal with any refund. (Pitchup later confirmed that it was in fact the campsite’s responsibility, so we repeated our request for a refund to the campsite by email. It has been over a week and we haven’t heard anything from them, despite chasing.) They did offer to move us to another pitch, but we decided to leave the campsite altogether for a number of reasons. It is extremely overcrowded - and not just because it is high season. People have been crammed into every imaginable space to maximise profits. It is never appropriate to squeeze “pitches” into a car park, particularly ones covered in excrement, and then charge €50 per night to use them. It is not an excuse that it is high season or that people have booked late - these “pitches” should not exist. There is no area suitable for campervans and caravans to wait while checking in (as this would mean not being able to cram in as many pitches). You are therefore likely to have to reverse round a bend and out onto the main road if you don’t guess the correct one of three entrances that is nearest to your pitch. (Both we and the campervan immediately behind us had to do this, with someone stopping traffic on the road. The other guests agreed that it was ridiculous and very unsafe.) Checking in was chaotic, with lots of people queueing from multiple directions to speak to just two members of staff. It took over 20 minutes, and we weren’t even given a map or told where any of the facilities are. Of course, properly staffing a campsite costs money, which the management seems unwilling to part with. Again, it is no excuse that it is high season - you know demand will be high, so you should provide proper staffing levels. We are coming to the end of a three-month road trip, which has taken us through Holland, Belgium, France and Italy, and we have stayed at dozens of campsites on the way, including during high season. Sadly, Camping Delle Rose has been both the worst (by a long way) and the most expensive. Reading many of the other reviews, we are glad we left after one night.

Blue electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The marketing. Well done to whoever put the listing copy and pictures together. It promised a lot and I was looking forward to the stay.

Disliked: Despite booking a grass pitch via Pitchup, which I expressly booked so as to ensure my little dog was going to be able to relax during the extreme heat being experienced in Europe this summer, I was given a paved pitch and told there were no others available because they were very busy. The paved pitch was red hot, as you would expect, and my poor dog couldn't be let out of my camper van, because of that. To make matters worse, the pitch wasn't even in the campsite itself ; it was infront of the campsite, in what was evidently a car park, in a previous time. There was a lot of road noise. When that became particularly evident, I returned to complain. I was show a dirt pitch, again in a desolate section in front of the campsite itself, and was told that it was an alternative, but it wasn't much better. It wasn't any better at all and I stayed put. Things didn't improve from there, unfortunately, either. At dinner time, I waited 40 minutes before I was provided with a menu and further 30 minutes before I got my first drink, due to many groups of people who weren't camping guests having booked in to eat. They were celebrating something, clearly, and after dinner, I returned to the camper van, but extreme noise from the celebrating locals continued through to 01:30am. Soon after this time, they departed in their cars ; clearly driving drunk. I went to inform the staff about this and they didn't seem to care at all, nor did they apologise for the noise. This place is clearly more more interested in running a bar/restaurant for locals than looking after their camping guests. For a campsite that cost quadruple what I paid elsewhere, I was expecting something really special at Camping Delle Rose. I didn't get it. The bungalow style accommodation offered here seemed much better. I saw many families enjoying their glamping-style accommodation and the swimming pool, etc. But if you've booked into this place for camping expecting to feel like you're included as part of the campsite, you won't get that, and I'd recommend you think again.

Local attractions

Take your pick of beach, mountain and rural holidays: this peaceful Liguria area is also only about 10 kilometres from the coast, in Italian countryside dotted with medieval villages and fortified towns, castles and churches, busy local food markets and local cafés and small restaurants. The site is also 12 miles from San Remo, a popular place on the Italian Riviera famed for its summer flower markets, the Milan–San Remo cycling classic and the Sanremo Music Festival, the singing competition that inspired the Eurovision Song Contest (whether that's a fab or a naff thing depends on your own individual taste…). Around the site's local municipality of Isolabona, hike the Passo del Cane mountain pass three kilometres away or tackle the peak of Monte Bignone, near San Remo in the San Romolo Natural Park. Coastal spots include Capo Mortola, Capo Verde, Cap Martin and Cap Rognoso; Monaco, Monte Carlo and the French Riviera are under 30 kilometres away.
