  • Two kilometres from the Old Town of Urbino
  • Pool surrounded by solarium with sun loungers
  • Bar-restaurant serving Mediterranean and regional cuisine
Ever been to the excellent Italian city of Urbino? Stick it on your 'I must get to this magnif place as soon as is humanly possible' list, for this ancient hillside settlement is really pretty special. Its Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the number and quality of its Renaissance buildings; it's home to a spectacular Ducal Palace that's one of the most famed monuments in Italy, and it has a handsome 200 year old botanical garden for peaceful potters. Just a couple of kilometres from this historic splendour is Campeggio Pineta, a scenic and family-friendly site overlooking the Urbino rooftops. Handsome vistas can be had all around the site – but an early option should be a dip in the pool, followed by a bask on a sun lounger in the surrounding solarium, all among a peaceful green setting surrounded by fields of blazing colour... After that (several hours later), make your way to the bar-restaurant to check out as much of its Mediterranean and regional cuisine as is humanly possible in one visit, or stock up in the nearby mini market to make your own meals. Restaurants of all flavours are a short drive away in Urbino, for tasty treats like rabbit in olives, roast pork, passatelli and white truffle tagliatelle.

Local attractions

Excellent Urbino, the capital city of the Marche region, was once the capital of Renaissance Italy and is stuffed with arty and architectural sights to see. (Tiptop bonus: its setting on the other side of the Apennines to Florence, Siena, Perugia and Assissi means it's not thronged with visitors even in high season.) The best known site in town is the Ducal Palace, dating back to the 15th century. It's home to the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, an extensive collection of Renaissance paintings that includes works by native of the town Raphael, as well as Titian, Timoteo Vito and Piero della Francesca, painter of the famed Flagellation. After seeing the palace and its arty works, have a bite to eat in the café then visit the 16th-century cathedral next door to see works by Barocci including a Last Supper. And after that? Raphael's birthplace, the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town and the Oratory of St John the Baptist are all excellent picks to round off a sightseeing day before a succulent evening meal in one of the Urbino restaurants. For day trips around the Marche region, you could buy terracotta in Fratterosa, go foraging for herbs, berries and mushrooms in the Nuova valley, delve into the spectacular Frasassi Caves or hike the Furlo Pass, a gorge on the ancient Roman road Via Flaminia. Sorbolongo, Orciano and Barchi all have spectacular hilltop views.
