  • Peaceful site just outside the village of Peveragno
  • Hiking, rafting and golf within a half-hour drive
  • Swimming pool, play area and communal barbecue
Dust off those walking shoes and/or gear up your bike; or, if it’s winter, pack up your skis. For this is a splendidly scenic area that’s bound to entice you out a-roaming in the fresh air. Even from Camping Il Melo itself you can gaze out on the gorgeous greenery that surrounds the place, with the foothills of the Alps lurking beyond. Venture out from this peaceful spot in the village of Peveragno and you can stride forth on all manner of walking and bike paths. Or you may elect to play a round of golf, hop on a horse or tackle the rapids on a raft. Come the snows, the pistes of Frabosa Soprana and Lurisia beckon. And if you overdo it the activity, thermal baths are on hand in a couple of local spa resorts. It’s not all about the out-and-about though – the site has its own outdoor swimming pool (with deckchairs providing a handy place for weary walkers to collapse) and there’s a leisure centre next door for games of tennis, volleyball or football. There’s also plenty of space for the bambini to run about and play games on the lawn. You’ll be needing a grand old feed to fuel your activity, of course – that’s easily sorted at the pizzeria next to the site or by hopping on your bike for the short creekside ride into the village for restaurants and shops. Haul your bounty back to base and you can grill it on the communal barbie. The campsite has large grassy pitches with optional electric hook-up. There are disposal points for chemical toilets, an accessible bathroom with a changing table for babies and a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer. Store food in the fridge or freezer in the washing-up room too. Those of you popping by in the winter will no doubt be chuffed to hear that toilet facilities are heated through the chillier times.

Local attractions

There are heaps of walking and bike trails around these parts – both directly around the site and in the nearby natural parks. The Maritime Alps Natural Park is a good place for a hike, and you can attempt a bit of wildlife spotting from the Centro Faunistico Uomini. There’s a river rafting centre half an hour away and a rather scenic golf course 15 minutes away. It’s worth popping down to Cuneo, 20 minutes away, to wander round the historic centre, pop into the cathedral and poke around in the museums. There are some lovely frescoes to admire in the nearby Madonna dei Boschi Sanctuary, too. When it’s time for a spa soak, head over to Lurisia, 15 minutes away.
