Cor… just clap your eyes on that beach for a second. Well, for a minute or three. And now can you picture being on it, Sardinian sand between your toes and sun blazing down overhead – and best of all, being only a couple of minutes' stroll from your pitch for sunrise dips and sunset swims? (Or, if your family is the type, frequent forays back to base throughout the day for forgotten sunscreen, toys, toddler paraphernalia and sippy cups.) Yes, this is a beachside site... Camping Village Le Dune is on the Costa Rei on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, just a couple of minutes' walk to the sandy beach and natural swimming pond of Piscina Rei. Nearby is the pink flamingo home of Colostrai lagoon, vibrant representatives of which can oft be seen flying overhead your holiday base. Much, much time should be carved out at Piscina Rei and at the several other spectacular sandy stretches nearby, for sunbathing and swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving, kayaking and windsurfing... On land, hire a bike on site to pedal around these handsome grounds and along the coast, or book a session with the riding school half a kilometre away: can you picture being on a Sardinian beach on horseback, cantering along the sands as the sun goes down…? Away from the beach, there's loads to do to keep you all entertained on site, such as a big pool if you yearn for yet more water and a beach volleyball court if you pine for yet more sand. Floodlit five-a-side football pitches can keep you active at any time of day or evening, and there are also tennis courts and a playground where you and the kids can practise your swings. Camping Village Le Dune is a peaceful and pretty place, with roomy pitches surrounded by gardens, greenery and colourful plants. Its centrepiece is the bar, restaurant and pizzeria in the middle of the grounds, with an outdoor terrace overlooking a stage area that's the scene of the varied programme of nightly entertainment. A mini market is also on site for your foodie convenience – if you'd like to picture stocking up on local goods for a barbecue or picnic back at your Sardinian seaside base...

Local attractions

Activities of land and sea are easily reached by foot, bike or a very short car journey from this seaside site, such as the cycle routes all around the grounds, scuba diving and snorkelling within a kilometre, and kayaking and windsurfing within four and five kilometres. Around 10 minutes' drive – or half an hour's bus ride – to the north is Capo Ferrato, the famed forest-covered cape ended by its famed lighthouse looking out to the blue waters. A wander among (some of) the 195 hectares of coastal forest is well worth an afternoon for a cooler time; if you can manage it, ascend the rocky heaps of Monte Ferru, the largest volcanic formation in Sardinia, for spectacular views of coast and sea. Past Capo Ferrato, drive a bit further along the coast to the splendid beach of Colostrai, near the beaut waters of Colostrai lagoon. The lagoon is part of several areas of wetland around the Colostrai and Feraxi marshes, all birdwatching havens where the canny can see storks, kingfishers, avocets and great cormorants as well as the famed flamingos.
