  • A 10-minute walk from Florence city centre
  • Spectacular views from the bar terrace
  • Restaurant with takeaway, summer nightclub and private parking
Cor – and cor again. It's a hike uphill to get here if you're traversing this splendi region by foot, but the views from Florence's Camping Michelangelo are so artistically excellent you'll care not a jot. And although your only way is up if you're arriving under your own steam, this spectacular Italian site is a mere 10 minutes' walk from Florence city centre (sì, a stay here does save many euros to then splash on Firzenze leather, vino and other swish goods). It's also a paltry single kilometre from the city's famed Sant'Ambrogio farmers' market: if you seek the Florence of the locals and not the tourist throngs, this colourful place is where to make for. The site has free private parking if you're coming by car, and is an easy drive from other tiptop destinations and attractions like the Chianti wine region (tours are available within 10 minutes' drive), the golden beaches of the Etruscan coast, and more city and townie sightseeing around Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca or Arezzo. On arrival, rest your travelling feet immediately via a toddle to the bar terrace for one of those Chianti vinos, as well as views of the green Tuscany countryside and Renaissance city stretching scenically below. Pizza and other local treats await at the site restaurant for after your aperitif; there's takeaway too, or you could sort stuff like a Tuscany native at the nearby market to have on a barbecue among the Florence city views. If you're a tad too tired on any night to head into town, the restaurant is also the setting for the site nightclub in summer. Camping Michelangelo has toilets, showers, disabled facilities and chemical disposal. And, if you really must dip your eyes to a phone or tablet among these Tuscan hill views, free wifi is available on site for guests too.

Local attractions

Take the 10-minute walk from the site to reach the spectacular city centre of fab Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and a rightly famed travel destination for centuries. There are gardens and museums galore to wander; eye-watering piazzas including the Piazza della Signoria; the 13th-century Il Duomo di Firenze or Florence Cathedral – and then, but of course, the many first-rate restaurants serving the finest food… do be sure to allow several days in town. Those of an arty disposition (and those who aren't; this is Florence, after all) should make for the Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell'Accademia, to gaze upon works by Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo, as well as a large collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. If you only have time for one gallery, the Uffzi is your destination if you yearn after Renaissance art and the flame-haired ladies of Botticelli; head for the Accademia to see the world-famed statue of Michelangelo's David,. The two are the most visited art galleries in all of Italy, so you'll be sure of splendour whichever one you pick. From Florence, take the shuttle to Fiesole, about 20 minutes' drive away, for piles of ancient artefacts around its ancient city centre, including Roman bath ruins and a Roman amphitheatre that hosts festivals throughout the summer. Curious scientists can also clamber the hilltop here, where one L da Vinci first pondered on the idea of flight. For day trips, venture into the nearby Chianti vineyards (tours are easy to sort from Florence), or have a sightseeing day around Siena, Lucca and Arezzo, all about an hour's drive away, or Pisa, within an hour and a quarter.
