Hikers, unite. For if you're up for an Italian walking holiday, among the lush green land, hills and valleys of spectacular Tuscany (and if not, why not?), the Lucca province's Camping Lago Apuane to the north of the region is the very place for you. And why? Because this lakeside site is a tiptop place for hiking and outdoor holidays, as it's set in the Serchio valley in the green, thickly forested and mountainous Garfagnana area. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, climbing and caving are all top activities here, around the Garfagnana and the two nearby national parks. For alternating outdoor days with urban adventures, Lucca is about 70 kilometres away and Florence 90. The site is surrounded by beech, cedar and fir trees and is crossed by a small river for swimming and fishing. It has its own restaurant specialising in regional cuisine, serving traditional Tuscan bread, homemade pastas, mushroom and polenta platters as well as grilled meat, cheese boards, pies and wood oven pizzas. Other facilities include bike hire, a playground, a food shop and free wifi.

Liked: Camping Lago Apuane is an amazing site. Visiting this camping (at 585m altitude) feels like being invited as guests to the outdoors by a large Italian family. Elia, Patrizia and the rest of the staff are all very very kind, helpful and professional. They reminded me of the surfers community in the Netherlands - laid back, easy going and with love for nature. When we arrived at the site, our electricity didn’t switch on. It didn’t take long to figure out that the problem was not related to the electricity supplied by the camping, but to our (rented) camper. Instead of leaving it up to us to solve the problem, Elia didn’t stop until he found the solution. He kept trying new solutions, and managed to explain and solve the issue. Patrizia went out of her way to help us by finding us an affordable and safe parking site for campers near Pisa. She made a few calls, checked some websites and thus helped us have an amazing visit to Pisa (which is a considerable ride to and from this camping). The restaurant crew was just as nice and professional. Besides tasteful dishes (yes, they serve great pizza at fair prices, but please try the steak with porcini, a typical local dish with great flavors), the staff is flexible, hospitable and just very relaxed. They too will go out of their way to accommodate you. The staff eats together every night just before the restaurant opens. The geographical location of Camping Lago Apuane is breathtaking. It is a small scale - camping at Lake Apuane and the only one there. as far as you can see. You can rent kayaks there, have a drink at the bar or just swim I the lake. It is peaceful, quiet and the nights are cool because of the mountains (which is very welcome in the middle of a heat wave in Italy). Staying at camping Lago Apuane is a breath of fresh air amidst the crowded commercial campings. Come here for an authentic stay in the beautiful Apuan mountains of Tuscany. We loved it there and would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.

Local attractions

To the north of Lucca between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, the Serchio valley has a different landscape than typical Tuscany, of mountains and forests rather than vineyards and olive groves. It's a popular place for fishing and canoeing as well as hiking and mountain biking. Camping Lago Apuane is in the Apuan Alps Natural Park, an area of deep valleys and high peaks. It and the mountains of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park have many hiking trails crisscrossing them and several famed spots at which to stop off, such as the Pietro Pellegrini botanical gardens, the marble quarries of the Alps and the remains of the Roman necropolis near the town of S. Bartolomeo. For town days, potter around Castelnuovo di Garfagnana 24 kilometres away or Barga within 37; Lucca is a bit further afield at 70 kilometres. The Selva del Buffardello adventure park is 15 kilometres away. Canyoning, rafting, rock climbing and caving are also popular nearby.

Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 10 day(s) of arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.
