  • Lush and highly scenic site near the spectacular spa town of Merano
  • Indoor pool and sauna plus outdoor pool with paddling pool
  • Tyrolean and Mediterranean restaurant with good veg and vegan options
Just look at that vista: overlooking the spa town of Merano, lush green grass and forest all around, and mountains in the distance, Camping Hermitage in Italy’s South Tyrol province is just five kilometres from the centre, half an hour’s drive from the Merano 2000 ski resort and hiking area and five minutes’ drive from the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Across from a swish hotel complex, the friendly Cavagna family’s site gives guests access to a modern restaurant and pizzeria that serves up delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as a good assortment of tasty stuff for carnivores for eat in and takeaway, as well as a sauna and two swanky and sparkling pools: one indoors and another outdoors with a paddling pool and solarium alongside. You can also book excursions directly at reception, where one of the Cavagnas or their team will help you to find the hikes and activities best suited to whatever sort of South Tyrol sojourn you’re after, and right outside the site is a bus stop for a regular service that whisks passengers to Merano centre for spa days, wanders around streets lined with art nouveau buildings and explores of its resplendent castle and gardens. If you’d rather go under your own steam, hire a bike on site and pedal in. Pitches are highly scenic, and well laid out across grassy terraces, and among the spotless amenities are a sanitary block with toilets and showers, plus bonus facilities of hairdryers and kid-friendly sinks.

Local attractions

The spectacular spa-filled core of Merano is about 10 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes on a bike if you fancy a pedal, with the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, the thermal baths, the alpine tourism museum and botanical gardens plus the Kurhaus on the Passer Promenade being just a few of the must-sees around the town. The Merano 2000 ski resort also doubles as a hiking, climbing and mountain biking area during summer. The hiking trails via circuits, scenic trails and summit treks (with secured and partially secured Via Ferrata climbing routes) range from easy to moderately challenging, and family bike rides will take you from 2,000 metres above sea level all the way down to the foot of Ifinger mountain. The Gruppo di Tessa nature park between Senales and Passiria valleys incorporates the Texel group mountain range and a varied landscape of savannas to shadowy forests and open moorland: head here for scenic cycling routes, Nordic walking trails and smashing hikes along the Merano High Mountain Trail.
