Toca da Raposa is a small campsite at the foot of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in Oliveira do Hospital, a six-minute walk to the village of Meruge. This is a peaceful site that's shaded by lots of oak, pine, olive and hazelnut trees, and from it you can easily explore the beaches that lie all along the river Alva. Facilities at the site include an outdoor pool, a games room and a play area. There's a bar on site that serves cold drinks, ice cream, snacks and Belgian beer, and guests can pick up the free wifi service there too. You'll also find a terrace restaurant serving local specialities in the site's characterful old farmhouse building. Among the amenities at Toca da Raposa are a washing-up area and a washroom block with hot showers and well-maintained toilets. There are loads of good hiking and mountain biking routes around the site and plenty of places you can go canoeing, climbing and fishing – just speak to the hosts for their top tips on the local area. Portugal's former capital, Coimbra, is just over an hour's drive away from the site for those who fancy a day trip out to have a wander around its preserved medieval city.
