  • Eco-friendly and sustainable site in a remote and rural location
  • 35 minutes' drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora
  • 7.5 forest hectares, communal terrace and solar-powered oven
Are you the sort who seeks as remote a location as possible while on holiday? In lush and serene surroundings, deep in a rural setting and among ancient dolmens and menhirs, castles and fortresses? Strike out into the Portuguese countryside to have a restful – or active – green break at Bubulcus & Bolotas Camping, about 35 minutes' drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora. The team here proudly points out that the site is rightly remote, in a quiet locale away from busy towns and tourist resorts. It covers seven and a half hectares of rich Mediterranean forest, with all accommodation areas set secludedly and spaciously well away from each other for maximum privacy and peace. The vibe is firmly friendly on eco and sustainable grounds too: showers and electricity are solar powered and LED bulbs are used throughout. A solar-powered oven is also on site so you can sort eats in these fine surrounds, or you can bring along your own barbecue to fry up your food among the cork trees, flowers and scrubs. Local town Vimieiro is about six kilometres away for supplies and is reachable by foot. Once food is sorted, on the barbie and then consumed, move along to the communal terrace near the reception office to digest, snooze, read, and charge batteries and small devices. Then all to bed, for restful slumbers and dreams of what to amble off to the following day: old old stones, river beaches, castles, cycling routes...

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: It's beauty, uniqueness of back to nature, peaceful. One of the very best we have stayed. Like camping in the middle of Africa's savanna. Extremely friendly and welcoming couple. The pool is vertually an infinity pool. If a fan of nature and beauty this is a must site. Spread out well placed level piches. Has limited electricity as all solar powered but water is pure from a 300 meter bore hole.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Although this is a secluded and remote location, there are options aplenty for days out around the site, from getting active to getting stuck into the many attractions of local history and heritage. The river beaches of Mora and Fronteira are a short drive away, and several shoreside beaches are at the lakes of Maranhão, Montargil and Alqueva. For pedalling or walking, ask at the Bubulcus & Bolotas Camping reception for directions to and info on the plentiful cycling and hiking routes close to the site. You could also set out to find some of the many dolmens and menhirs scattered around the region: these can be quite elusive, so once again ask the site team for directions and tips. Plenty of the hills around this part of Portuguese countryside have a castle or a fortress, many open to the public. For more piles of ancient buildings including a famed Roman temple, the Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval and stunning 13th-century cathedral, drive 35 minutes or so south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora. Estremoz, Evoramonte and Arraiolos are all within 25 minutes' drive.
