  • Luxury eco-friendly coastal site on the edge of Arrábida Natural Park
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of beaches, watersports and hiking
  • Half an hour's drive from the Palmela wine region, an hour from Lisbon
Need to slow down and savour life? Slowlife Glamping will show you how… This is a little eco-friendly gem of a site on the forested coast of Portugal’s Setúbal district, about an hour’s drive from Lisbon. In carving out this slow-paced spot between the deep green hills and the dazzlingly blue seas, the friendly proprietors Marta and David have worked hard to make a space that’s in harmony with its surroundings. Recycling, composting and alternative energy sources are used as much as possible on the site, whose accommodation units are designed to be low-impact. The quarters are shady and comfortable, well-spaced around the site for maximum seclusion and privacy and there’s a mix of ensuite facilities and communal washrooms with showers heated by woodburner and composting toilets. Barbecues are allowed on the site, as is fishing, and if by chance you haven't caught enough you can stock up on delicious stuff for your alfresco feasts in the shops, supermarkets and markets of the many surrounding villages and towns within a short drive or cycle ride (hire bikes from the site), as well as eat out and sample the atmosphere in the local bars and restaurants.

Local attractions

The white sands and inviting blue seas of Bicas and Meco are 10 and 15 minutes’ drive away for swims, beach walks, sunbathing and sundowners, but if you’re up for more active stuff on the water, make for Casa do Infantado, 20 minutes away for surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking and coasteering on the sea and the Albufeira lagoon. To get in touch with your wild side (or just go for long walks), it’s a 10-minute drive to the Arrábida Natural Park, a protected wilderness of coast and hills full of hiking trails, deserted coves and wildlife. A must-see spot within the park boundaries is Cabo Espichel, quarter of an hour away: a clifftop pilgrimage site, windswept and enigmatic, with traces of dinosaurs adding a timeless touch. If you’re more into town tours it’s half an hour to Sesimbra, a pretty old fishing village with a lively fish market, a handsome spread of fish restaurants and a less fishy but still worth-visiting fort and castle. A similar distance away, Palmela is the centre of the wine-growing region of the same name and peppered with places to try and buy the local product. Also very doable in a day is the capital, Lisbon (an hour): an increasingly hip but still friendly city of cobbled hills, Moorish castles, tram rides, flea markets and custard tarts.
