Those pics, they make us want to wistfully weep. And pack for Portugal with some immediacy. -os-Rios in Portugal's Ponte da Barca is in an utterly beaut location, between the Lima and Tamente rivers in the Peneda-Geres National Park. This is Portugal's only national park, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and one of the most visited natural spots in the country, for its wildlife and plants, activities on land and water, and of course that utterly beaut landscape... as we say, the pics make us want to pack with some immediacy. At base, the -os-Rios camping field is shaded by pine trees and is a short walk away from the site amenities: a loo block with free hot showers, a mini market and a playground. Bike hire is available and there's also pétanque and fishing on site. And another factor that makes us want to pack with some immediacy is the site restaurant, in a cosy meeting place with a big shaded terrace and serving highly tasty local dishes including a vegan menu at decently small prices; try local meats, octopus, traditional cod dishes and Cabrito (roast goat kid) cooked slowly by a blazing hot fire...

Route directions

From Porto: Stay on the A3 for approximately 75km and continue towards Braga/Valença. Come off at Exit 12 signposted Ponte de Lima (Ponte da Barca, Arcos de Valdevez and PNPG – Parque Nacional Peneda-Geres). Take the second exit after the toll point signposted Ponte da Barca, Arcos de Valdevez and continue for approximately 15km on the IC28. At the roundabout take the second exit towards Lindoso and continue for 10km. The campsite is signposted. There is a daily shuttle bus from Porto airport to Ponte de Barca where you can catch another bus to Lindoso. The bus stops 20 metres from the campsite.

Local attractions

As you might have figured from the locale and from those site pics, the area around -os-Rios is filled with active opps in all directions: hiking, biking, Jeep tours, horse riding and wandering around the local lakes and waterfalls are all easily accessible from here, and if you prefer a damper time, you can book watersports activities in the site reception. The Peneda-Geres National Park is also top nature spotting and birdwatching terrain, with species to spot including roe deer, birds of prey, otters, Minho horses, grey wolves, pine martens, wildcats and red squirrels. Also nearby, trek along to the National Monument Castelo de Lindoso and its dam; the Mosteiro de São Bento, famed for its tasty oranges, and Soajo, the historic village with granaries supported on granite slabs from Peneda Mountain. -os-Rios is handily located about 15km from Ponte da Barca and Arcos de Valdevez, 60km from Braga and 100km from Porto.
