  • Beachside site surrounded by a centenarian eucalyptus grove
  • A five-minute drive from Almeria
  • Bar-restaurant with spacious terrace
A five-minute drive from Almeria? That sounds just splendid in itself... but add in that Camping La Garrofa is right on the beach and there are strong possibilities that one might want to hide away here for weeks. The ancient city of Almeria is known as Spain’s sunniest, and the province of Almeria is the most arid area of all of Europe – so dry that many a spaghetti Western has been shot in these here parts. And this is the region of Andalucian coast, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the Calar Alto Observatory and the Sierra Nevada… yep, one could hide away here for weeks. And yep, this site is right on the beach. It's also surrounded by a centenarian eucalyptus grove, on a sheltered corner of Almerian coastline and in a (highly) scenic setting with fishing right on site and heaps of hiking in its nearby hills. Pitches are spacious and many have sea views. Spanish cuisine at decent prices can be sampled from the daily menus and tapas at the cosy bar-restaurant, where you can eat indoors or outside on the big terrace.

Local attractions

Camping La Garrofa's setting has it well placed for easy access to the excellent city of Almeria as well as the natural areas of this arid province, from deserts to coastline to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de Los Filabres. Almeria's only natural park is Cabo de Gata-Nijar, the biggest protected coastal area in the province. It has a desert climate (yet tis at the sea too), Spain's biggest volcanic rock formation, craggy cliffs and tiny islands brimming with marine life: the park has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1997. Birdwatching, diving, boating and geology field trips can all be arranged at the natural park; if you're hiking, try the Caldera de Majada Redonda trail, leading to the centre of an ancient volcano caldera. The Tabernas desert is where the Almeria spaghetti Westerns were filmed, including the Dollars trilogy (that's A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for the uninitiated). It's still used these days for film shooting, but quite a few critters are around too if you'd rather spot native species instead of cowboys: look out for Bonelli eagles, peregrine falcons, ladder snakes and natterjack toads. Several traditional Almerian villages are a few miles from the site, and do have a few days in Almeria too, to see famed sights like its Alcazaba, the air raid shelters used in the Spanish Civil War, its cathedral and its Chanca – the group of houses carved into rocks.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location, met some really lovely people. The camp facilities were of a good quality. Bar & restraunt very qauint & very spanish which we loved. Beach needs a little investment as a result of previous bad storms & covid lockdown I guess . But not too many changes as I think it could spoil the charm of this gem of a spot.

Disliked: Some more sand ...beach damaged by recent storms. Information pack re local transport , restraunt opening times...whats available in the shop etc . Diversion was a pain ....but out of the control of the campsite. It made direct access difficult . Apparently it was highlighted on tge campsites website but not if you used Pitchup or ACIS I believe.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Not a lot really

Disliked: Very overpriced. The campsite needed a good overhaul. Traffic noise from motorway above, which couldn't be helped I know. Toilets clean enough but smelly. One night cost 29euros. Stayed at another beautiful campsite for 12euros and it had a pool. Wouldn't recommend

2 bedroom cottage / chalet / bungalow

Liked: De locatie aan het strand en de veranda van het huisje

Disliked: Het huisje en het meubilair is verouderd en aan vervanging toe, de camping zelf is ook erg verouderd en het personeel is niet zo vriendelijk.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Sea view and closeness to beach. Nice waking up hearing the sea

Disliked: Middle of nowhere, taxis wouldn’t come from Almería despite being nearest town meant had to cut trip short. Shop was closed and bar closes early (10pm) so very little to do.

Liked: Booked for 1 week and staying for 3, for us a perfect site, beachfront, restaurant and bar. Easy access to regular bus service to Almeria and Aguadulce. The site is very Spanish with friendly staff, and the facilities were very clean.
